In a time that seems like centuries ago, things weren't so shit.

Hope I'm not duplicating another thread but couldn't see it. There was a time when we weren't shit. Its a piece that almost leaves you with a tear in your eye. I understand after yesterdays big signing departure from S2 some may never laugh again but I hope this helps a few souls heal.
Cheers for that BW, Alan Shearer going for just over £3.5m (not far of Ched Evans) shows just how far this game has gone wrong today.

Steve Cryan is wearing the red steward jacket in gangway C. I am a few yards away to his left from him!

Im.also somewhere behind the net on that picture was bang level with the throw the flick on and goal surrounded by man yoo fans

In Match Weekly a week or two after that match there was a lovely 2 page photo spread of the goal that had so many faces in the kop that you could see very well. All the spectators in the Kop had their eyes fixed on the ball and nearly all were about to jump out of their seats. Each one had facial expressions anticipating that the ball was going into the net. Would love to see that photo again!

Used to spend a lot of time drinking round the boozers around bdtbl in those days

All my mates lived around the ground (i lived on derbyshire lane )remember that day just calling round to my mates and going for a pint and walking up to the ground (no ticket) and just strolling in to the first game of the season like it was the most normal thing ever ,playing man utd at home in the first ever premierleague game

When old people tell you to treasure the good times because they dont last forever you dont realise just how significant that is until times like now when youre lolling around the third division and people are telling you things are great

I was just about to post this link until I scanned down the page and found it.

John Ashdown - a man whose bread is correctly buttered.

Damn right, judge.

“The place was dead … there was not a corner of the club which hadn’t succumbed to an aura of impending doom,” wrote Bassett of his early impressions of a club that he joined in January 1988.

And we could be in a similar place now if it wasn't for our fantastic supporters.

We are in a worse place than when Bassett took the helm, we are a league below for a start.

Not for long we weren't. DB took over on 21st January, 1988. Less than 4 months later (18th May) we lost to Bristol City in the relegation play-off 2nd leg and returned to our natural home - Division Three.:(

I know I was there, but we were only down there one season unlike this lot who supposedly have more backing than Bassett ever had. 5 years and fucking counting :-(

As I was on the Kop that day I hope someone can find a copy of that photo.

I like to think that the day the Premier League and all its money was thrust upon us the footballing Gods decided that history and tradition would still triumph and they made sure that the first goal would be scored on the birthplace of the Beautiful game. The true home of football.
