If you buy enough 3rd division players, that's where you end up

Anybody else see the similarities between now and where we were in the January 2007 transfer window when we knew the team needed strengthening to stay up. What happened ? There was the same talk of not paying over the odds for players and we were linked with a few and then having missed out on the good ones and ended up making a few late distressed purchases on players who did nothing (John Stead being the only exception).

If I go to a car boot sale is it better to go at the beginning and snap up a few bargains or at the end when all that is left is junk?.

The reports we won't stump up more than 300k for someone who was player of the season and comes with good reports if true makes me think the board might have that silly short sighted penny pinching wait til its too late attitude again and we'll end up buying another Shelton and Fathy at the last minute or if we have a bad start. Hope I'm wrong but where is the evidence so far.

Please don't tell me again "where's the money going to come from", championship clubs each received prize money of £4.3 million last year plus gate receipts plus TV and merchandising revenue etc. Just needs to be well spent and the cheapest and late distressed purchases rarely give the best value.

2007 and 2017 are fundamentally different in one critical area . The managers :)

I think that the actual statement by Tommy Docherty was, "If you buy enough Third Division players, you will eventually have a Third

Division Team". He was Man. Utd.'s manager at the time and said it straight after their 4-1 win at the Lane in December 1975. This

defeat was during that dreadful 1975/76 season when we were relegated from Division 1, if I remember correctly, by the end of March.

Four of the players he could have had in mind were Bradford, Field and Garbett who all came from Blackburn and Eddy who came from

Watford. There were probably some others in the side who came from the lower divisions.

I wasn't even born yet and just remembering that season meks me skin crawl :(

And let's face it what woman could resist a man with a shifty look in his eye and the mottled cheeks of the hardened drinker, eh ladies?

Yes, spend it all on transfer fees because we all know the magic money tree pays for dreary stuff like wages. In fact let's get Dianne Abbott in to lead our transfer buying.

I'd cut Keith Eddy a bit of slack, I thought he was a classy player, but yeah, the rest were shite. TC was about to fuck off and Woody was over the hill too. Grim days, especially following the euphoria of the previous season.

It's a result of exasperation when I read posts like yours. Follow the Barnsley model ffs.

Barnsley sign Isgrove on a free from Southampton. He was on loan to them last season, really good, tidy player.

Sound business, quality footballer being the key; fits the profile their manager is seeking.

Run of the mill, dwarf scuffler. Nothing more, nothing less. That's not to say the Barnsley chops haven't bought well this last couple of seasons.
