do something different this season, and instead of the agony and pain we tend to put ourselves through, go on and have a season where we win the league with no real stress. I have watched my beloved team for nearly 50 years, and we have never ever done things the easy way.... We have the highs of promotion but with the exception of the old 4th division, we have always been on tenterhooks and biting our nails until nearly the last game. Then we have the numerous and to many to mention disappointments. I am not getting carried away as it is only 3 games, and our friends up the road were crowing this time last season after they had a good start, but wouldn't be nice if we carried the winning ways on, and had a season were we could relax knowing that we could tie the league up early, ....... that would be bliss, I live in hope but as usual my betting is the stress will and agony will return in some shape or form. We know it is the United way!

That would just be boring, i want us to be 3 down at exeter and come back to win 4-3, win the league and get promoted at the same time.

thought we went up at cardiff ages before the end

Technically we didn't go up until the day after the Cardiff game, as Leeds failed to beat Reading, but the point stands. It was nice to do it at a canter for a change.

3 of our last 5 promotions were tied up before the last game of the season:

1981-82: we were up when Peterbrough lost at Hereford on 5/5/82 with United still having 2 games left
1988-89: we were effectively up after drawing 2-2 at Wolves on 9/5/89 with one game to go. Port Vale could equal our points total (which they did) but would have had to turn round a goal difference deficit of 13 (which they didn't).
2005-06: as above, we had 3 ganes left.

The two nailbiters were in 1983-84 when, we had to wait on Hull's game at Burnley and 1989-90 when we had to win at Leicester if Newcastle won at Middlesborugh (as it happened Newcastle lost so the Leicester result was ultimately irrelevant).

Relegation does tend to go to the last game though, as it did in 78-79, 80-81, 87-88, 93-94 and 06-07. Last season was the first season we had been relegated before the last game since 75-76.

In the past few seasons the teams forging ahead in the league have never looked great but they kept getting results. We have got off to a great start, one better than I imagined. Yes the run will end at some point but it sets up the season really well.

I only actually remember the one promotion, I was referring to the relegation scraps, and the failed promotion bids too, when by and large we were usually at least the third best team in the Division!

1980: County Cup
1982: Div 4 championship
1982: County Cup
1986: Northern Intermediate League
1988: Yorkshire and Humberside Cup
1998: Pontin's League Cup
2003: Pontin's League Title
