I think the house was called Moncriefe House not far from Machon Bank. Was it in the Jimmy Sirrell era?

Ian Holmes was a right winger who I think we ended up selling to York.

Used to go in the Brincs on a Thursday before going to the Nether Edge Club. Decent Whitbread pub that had a fish pond in the entrance.

Bumped into this geezer out round Barnsley the other day. Brilliant guy.

Anybody remember him?

He said his debut for Unitedqppp

was at Old Trafford in front of 50,000.
Played in 4 league games plus 2 sub appearances and in 1 FA Cup match also 1 League Cup for us. His debut was against Manchester United in April 1972 but it was at Bramall Lane, not at Old Trafford. Crowd was 45,045. Score was 1-1 (Salmons scored for us). He played in the next game which was in the 4-0 home defeat to Derby (who went on to be the league champions a month later) and you can see highlights of the match in Youtube, Returned to the side in the 2-2 League Cup replay at Charlton in October 1972. Started in the 3-1 defeat at West Ham (highlights of the match is on You Tube too) and was denied a goal in the first minute of the 1-0 home defeat to Everton because of poor officialism (see video below and you will see why). His two sub appearances were in the 3-0 defeats at Coventry (Nov 1972) and at home to Liverpool (Boxing Day 1972). His last game was in the 2-1 FA Cup 4th round defeat at Carlisle in February 1973 as Woody was ruled out due to an injury.

Offside my foot. Was the linesman Stevie Wonder? :)
You didn't have to be the one receiving the ball to be offside back then :(
You just had to be "seeking to gain an advantage " which of course you nearly always were because you were closer to the opponents goal

I think he originally came from Wath upon Dearne area. Must be knocking on a bit now.

Surely I'm not the only one who was expecting some sort of Bilbo Baggins piss take thread?...

I’m still baffled why he didn’t make it...
