I was only a kid at the time 14/15 but Bobby Campbell to me was amazing.
He only played one season with us,him and Edwards up front,(Chico) Hamilton on the left and Woody on the right.
We were shit of course but great times. He looked a right hard Bar steward at the time.

Who was the keeper that same season when we let five goals in three games on the trot. Doing my nut trying to remember.Nicky Johns springs to mind but i'm sure he came later. Was it Steve Conroy ?

My mate worked at the Crazy Daisy and I dropped something off for him one Saturday lunch time on my way to the Lane. There at the bar was Bobby merrily supping a pint. On arriving at the match I told my mate the exclusive news that Campbell wouldn't be playing. This turned out to be bollocks as out he trotted at five to three with the rest of the lads. Had a mare!

A even less happy memory was going to Fulham on Easter Monday for an 11am kick off (i.e a 4am start from my house) having done the same for Orient (4-0 or 4-1 defeat if memory serves) on the Good Friday. 1-0 down with a few minutes left and Bobby has the simplest of headers to equalise. Somehow manages to get it over the bar from about a yard and we end up losing. Happy days.

The unfortunate Keeper was Jim Brown - I blamed the defence.

Unfortunately watched all three! Wasn't it Arsenal (Cup), Bolton and Sunderalnd. Took the lead at Sunderland if I recall, was at Newcastle Poly at the time. Was it 0-5 1-5 1-5 or something?

Happy Harry soon sorted the problem of young talented strikers at the Lane by getting shut of them all, on the cheap, and replacing them with a load of old dross like Barry Butlin, Jeff Bourne, Douggie Brown, Steve Finneston, Steve Neville and Leonard De Goey.

sounds familiar doesn't it?.. it's groundhog day!

What is remarkable about this series of deals is that, without exception, all of the 5 players United sold went on to long careers - Edwards, Varadi, Stainrod and Benjamin all played into the 1990s at a decent level - whereas all of their immediate replacements were out of league football after a couple of years, save for Steve Neville.

Mind you, these were not deals done "on the cheap". United got over 100 grand each for Benjamin and Varadi and they had played less than 15 games between them. Edwards and Stainrod went slightly cheaper but commanded decent fees. Mind you, that doesn't make it right (see Walker, Kyle and Naughton, Kyle). The sale of Edwards in particular was dumb in the extreme.

Memories!

True story! Bobby lived in digs during his time at the lane, and Bobby being Bobby was regular out having one or two. One night he'd had a real good night and cam back completely smashed (not in the Keys way!). He fell into his bed, but was kept awake by the landladies cat giving it the midnight on the wall outside his window. Bobby yelled at it, chucked stuff at it and eventually decided he'd had enough and got up went out and wrung it's neck.

Anyway a few seasons later Bobby comes back to the lane with some team or another (might've been Bradford) and Dave who stood on the kop with me had got to hear the above story. For the whole game whenever Bobby got near the kop Dave would scream, 'tell us about the landladies Cat, Bobby!' This went on for ages until about 10 minutes from the end when Bobby had a shot close in that was saved by the keeper and the ball rolled out directly down from where we were stood. Dave ran down the kop and screamed, 'tell us about the landladies cat, Bobby!' Well, he heard this one, looked up into the kop and gave a massive bid grin and gave us the wringing sign with both hands! Top man Bobby!

When I was little and played football with my Dad he would say in a sing-song voice "Bobby Campbell hit the post it should have been a goal" whenever a shot hit the post. He also did then when someone missed a easy pool shot, etc. He eventually just shortened it to exclaiming "Bobby Campbell" when a relatively easy chance was missed, when watching football on TV or whatever.

For that reason I associated Bobby Campbell with missing sitters. A lot.
