Private sector pay, especially at the top is obscene and needs looking at, of that there is no doubt but that's a different argument. The bloke you mentioned though probably paid nearly half that in tax so is that a form of altruism?

I'm not sure it's altruistic if you're forced to do it.

And my point, as clearly stated, was that there are a lot of altruistic people who work in the public sector and charities. It wasn't 'all charity and public sector workers are altruistic' which is both a different set of words completely and a different concept.

I've been in the same job for almost 15 years, working for my father in law. I could have earned a lot more money if I'd gone back into pub management, but at what cost? I don't work nights or weekends, I rarely do over 50 hours a week, as opposed to pub management where 50 hours is, frankly, a part-time toss off.
This has freed me up to spend every Friday for five years with my daughter until she went to school, weekends off meant I could get a season ticket for the Blades, and I have managed to have a family and social life too. Otherwise I'd have been working 16 hour days, dealing with the ever rapacious demands of the breweries/pubcos and the drunken arseholes who made the job a pain in the arse. I would however have earned a lot more money, but there you go, sometimes it isn't always about the money. Sometimes you want more from life than a big bank balance.
