He was doing quite well until the last paragraph where he says it won't last because nearly all the top 6 have just had an off season.

Describes our formation as 'overlapping centre-backs' and then suggests the two centre halves just thought one day, "fuck it, I'm gonna amble forward and see what happens".

You should stick to writing biographies about legendary bands, which I've read and is really good.

It's all so patronising.

Awwww bless 'em, look at that little northern club doing well. Look at their cheeky northern manager; doesn't look like Mourinho. HE WEARS A TRACKSUIT! Probably doesn't know what a proper suit looks like. They done so well without much money. Had to invent a new tactic dontchyaknow! Clever northern scamps. It'll not last obviously. They're NORTHERN!

Like his piece ended half way through, very compact.
Bill Sharp, may have heard of him. Doesn't score many (EPL). Just highest scorer in English leagues lately.

I've liked his stuff, Glory Game is a great read, but this one seems a bit off-key for him. He does have a rather quirky style that isn't to everyone's taste, maybe this is too quirky. Caribbean, rum and stuff, maybe he's trying to emulate his namesake.

I always saw Norman as a pint-of-mild-game-of-5's and 3's-in-the-tap-room guy.

He is correct though, as it is only ever one of the two (JOC/Bash) that go forward. Our Rock Egan remains resolutely back, squared jawed chin, legs like tree trunks and muscular torso* awaiting any rogue attacker who fancies his chances...

* I got carried away with the flowery non footy prose in the article.

I dislike the idea that it happened by chance, when in fact if he'd done a little research, he'd know it was completely planned and worked very hard on.

A well respected journalist and I always enjoy reading positive articles about us.

However they are all now becoming very much 'same old same old'.

Come across as though they are the first ones to ever mention our overlapping centre backs.

Need some new thoughts on the block

I'd suggest it evolved, rather than being a cunning tactical device invented overnight by CW/AK. Bash always got forward and most of us thought that was part of his problem. He never seemed quite good enough as either a centre half or midfielder. When we moved to 5-3-2 and were chasing games, he was given licence to do this, but initially JOC used to stay well back. The clever bit was to then encourage JOC to do the same on the other wing, by making Coutts (then Norwood), drop further back to cover.

I'd say that without Basham, the system wouldn't have evolved like it did and become such a big part of our game. Where CW/AK deserve credit, is in recognising this and developing JOC on the other side.

Exactly. Evolved but didn't happen overnight. Knill has said in interviews that they needed to go with 3 CB's but also needed to create overloads and they realised the best way would be for the two wide CBs to go forward and join the attacks.

And it's evolved and been tweaked ever since with a great deal of hard work by the players and coaching staff. Another reason why it makes me laugh when I keep hearing we'll get 'found out'. Yes lads, but don't be stupid enough to think we'll slavishly just continue to play exactly the same way even if teams manage to combat our current way of playing.

funnily enough, the only mention of us in the Glory Game is also about our overachieving - the Spurs players are listening to the other results after a game early in the season and are impressed that we've won again.

I am surprised he didn't mention the decline of the steel industry, Sean Bean and write it as "t'overlappin' centre hayfs".

I think that this is another article for Chris to stick on't wall:rolleyes:.

Patronising twat. "Look at the little notherners, bless them. Let's give them a pat on the head and a Werther's, then they can be on their way."

Fuck off. I'd rather they not bother.

As Davies says, he is a Northerner himself. He's from Cumbria.

I see nothing objectionable in that article.

Genuinely can't see why that makes the slightest difference? I once went to Russia; doesn't make me Russian. My bet is that he identifies as a northerner when it suits. And it certainly did for the purposes of this article.

My post above was less aimed at this particular writer, but more the tone of many of the articles that have been written of this ilk. The theme of which is that we have done well despite our disabilities. The tone of this was particularly nauseous:
"I do like to see ‘umble, ordinary northern clubs doing well. "
"Sheffield United. Don’t you adore ‘em?"
"Our Chris is so utterly English and ordinary, a dead ringer for the geezer what just painted my kitchen."
"Liverpool is a metropolis" (oh fuck off)
"Sheffield United, with its ancient ground and modest capacity, seems a real, old-fashioned English club, where British and Irish lads do the business, having been round the block a few times. "

Also, being from Carlisle, he claims that to him, Liverpool and Manchester are not Northern. But apparently we are? Wut? No, it suits him and his article to portray us as such.

Hey ho, it's the New Statesman anyway. Can't wait for Brendon O'Neil to decry our use of Coco in promos and complain about us being SJWs because we once had rainbow laces.

Funny how writers of these type of articles never seem to have heard of any of our players, including BIlly until this season which is plainly bullshit.

I have a number of mates who support PL teams who until this season could name only 2 of our players - Sharp and Henderson.

hard for us to grasp but a lot of PL fans completely ignore what is happening below the PL.

Your right Revolution, I always take a keen interest in the lower leagues like a lot on here. I like to see how ex Blades are faring and any up and coming talent etc , I suppose I always judge people by myself.

It's the sort of piece you'd expect to see in Good Housekeeping. The bit someone reads when they're on the lav and fancies expanding their knowledge into a subject they know nothing about.

Polite and uninformative.
