Just found this out and wondered if anyone on here is old enough to remember any stories or could get some more info regarding yet another one of our old guard who has sadly passed away. R.I.P.

Another link with our past has sadly passed away. Former player Howard Johnson was born in Pitsmoor in 1925 and was an incredible 25-years-old when he joined United from local club Norton Woodseats.

Johnson was one of that long gone breed of player - he was part-time and a trained accountant - later in life he would be a computer systems analyst.

United made reported donations for his signature of £200 and it would be money well spent. The former Firth Park Grammar School pupil was regarded as being as hard as nails and relished a battle with some famous strikers of that era.

He played his part in the 1952/53 promotion season and was rewarded with a Championship medal - a real fairytale for a local lad playing non league football to such a late age. He also went on to represent York City and was well regarded at Bootham Crescent during his spell with the Minstermen

In recent years, Johnson had moved out to Lincolnshire with his wife and, as a result, United had lost touch with him. All were saddened to hear of his death and offer sincere condolences to his family. His funeral will take place at Hutcliffe Wood on the 1st July at 11.30am.

Cheers for that Wizadry,

Knew nowt about the bloke...

Thanks for that Wizardry.

John Garrett does a sterling job keeping us all up to date with the people who represented us in years gone by.

Although I'm not related to them I feel connected to them and reading some of their stories about their time at BDTBL makes it feel like an episode of Who Do You Think You Are. It endorses the statement of being a Family Club.

Sure there are other Blades who feel the same way. Wonder if other teams supporters have such an affiliation to the players who represented their clubs in the past.

To quote Howard :-

I could never play football, but I could stop all those that could.

Lovely man.

Condolences, to Maureen, Andy, Jane and family.
A good servant to the Blades in the day when players were allowed to tackle.
Football seemed more exciting then but it could be due to the fact that we were kids and nothing else to do in those hard up days.

Everything's more exciting when you're a kid. It's all new.

Very true but the interesting point is whether our supporters have any affiliation with the players who represent their club NOW.o_O
