How to beat us

I don’t think they did us over that day at all. They won because we were shit not because they were particularly good.

Our confidence was at a real low point on that day. We’d been out of sorts and were struggling to play with any real tempo or momentum.

We played Norwood and Fleck in midfield so had zero legs and athleticism against one of the divisions most athletic teams. When Norwood plays if the opposition put someone quick and athletic on him man for man it totally nullifies us and we’re overrun through midfield - it’s hardly a fallowfield coaching masterclass.

They seemed to score out of nothing and then created very little for the rest of the game.

Editing because I sound a bit bitter here, i like Luton, how they play and what they’ve achieved on a shoe string and do not begrudge them any success.

I just feel if we’d played then with the Doyle, Berge Mcatee midfield and Baldock and a bit of belief as we moved on to for the latter part of the season this game would’ve been a different story.

Should have spanked them

They were awful but took their one and only chance

Master class my arse

Master class in hindsight

That game was one of the most turgid, depressing games of ‘football’ I’ve ever seen.

If that is a ‘masterclass’ then I don’t want to learn!

I agree, Hecky lost us that game with his bizarre starting lineup. I remember being really pissed off when I saw team.
Fortunately the penny then dropped and he started then picking more sensible teams.

I genuinely think Luton will survive. Got a great manager there and team ethic. Remind me of united under Wilder.

They'll finish higher than both us and Burnley
Luton will finish bottom, their recruitment will continue with young, fairly cheap players.
Sensible approach, but not one that keeps you in the prem.

Hate this kind of post match narrative building that it was somehow pre determined they would win when the victory is by such a narrow margin.

Luton defended well, benefited from a terrible display from us and got a huge slice of luck with the goal. Play that game again 10 times and on 7 occasions it ends up as a 0-0 draw. On another day we might even end up scraping a 1-0 win.

Money for old rope this kind of analysis, sometimes its easily forgotten how much football results are down to an element of chance.

May as well have our match against Norwich as a "masterclass" its just standard tactics to win away ugly

Does this remond anyone of that John Egan "Art of defending" Article? Could end up making himself look a bit silly.

All riding on the back of Luton's rags to riches story, which admittedly is a much more admirable one than the likes of any of the guff about Wrexham or Bournemouth being bankrolled to the top division.

It's purely to generate clicks and interest. If it was a pure coaching thing they'd get Carrick on to show how Archer and Akpom took us to the cleaners but of course that's not very interesting to the armchair Premier League fan because Middlesbrough didn't go up.

Will they do this with Pep on how he will most likely beat Luton 5-0 at the Etihad? Doubt it.

I watched the highlights again. Shows the same story as the stats, based on good chances we should have won. A worrying clip for their goal, Fleck is squared up, nutmegged and left for dead in the penalty area.

was one of those games either side could have won , we missed too many openings , they scored with their only on target attempt , hey ho thats football , not really a masterclass

like Brentford doing the double over man city , but city missed about 20 nailed on chances in both games , not genius tactics , more poor finishing

Also - is everyone forgetting the night we were like Real Madrid and Brazil combined but still lost 4-0 to Scunny at home? Funny old game.

If doyle and mcatee start we win that easily
Was a turning point for us in that it was about half a dozen times in a short time our midfield was completely overran

I hope luton have better master plans than that next season as that was one of if not the worst game of football ive ever watched and ive seen some shite going all the way back to harry bassets blades v bobby goulds wimbledon

I still think that game is incredibly mis-remembered. We might have had the lions share of the game but we were fucking dog-shit woeful defensively and hardly outplayed them.

From what I remember we missed a couple of big chances but just checking the stats they had more shots on target than we did. It wasnt a 4-0 game but I dont think we were Pep’s Barcelona either.

Deliberate attempt to give the opposition an advantage, but also spelling out how Luton play..

Are they trying to give our opponents an advantage, because we will both be battling to just stay up, quite sinister when you think about it..

He could have just wrote, "the sheff utd players on the pitch that day just didn't care" we were there, and he'd be right..

Ohhhh give me a break Rob Edwards…It was just an off day for us…Even after the game I still knew we would gain promotion silly. It was a rather poor game of football that statistically we should have won by all accounts.

A lot of bollocks that, I remember the game as a really poor game, one of our worst performances.. but we still were the better side for large portions of the game and should have won.

Similar to the Rotherham home match, we hardly created a single chance.

Luton were really negative but once they scored they shut up shop and won pretty easily, they never looked in any trouble.

Think they do deserve credit that we did so much attacking but never remotely looked like scoring.

We were so poor but that’s because Luton made us poor.

Yeh remember it well, even when we were 3-0 we were creating so many good chances that I still felt fairly confident of winning. Think we hit the post about 4 times and had a couple of goals ruled out.

Agree…..we played brilliantly that night, massive entertainment but some how lost 0-4.

Another home game where we played well, playing up tempo attacking football was the 0-3 defeat to Wolves. One of our better displays under Blackwell but again amazingly lost on the night.
