How this season compares to other promotion seasons

I think only 1989/90 comes close to this season.

It doesn't compare in as much as it isn't finished yet

I was really surprised that we’ve only had 10 promotions (I make it 11) but I suppose we spent a very long time in Div 1.

The first one I remember was 1963, but was too young to understand what it meant in terms of nerves. I think I’d have to go with 1989/90 in terms of sheer improbability and against all odds, but with the best football I’ve seen since the 1971 team went up.

Probably need to revisit at the end of the season

We got promotion in 1892/93 too so that is 11

(Pardon the shameless attempt to advertise a thread I started) In the '60 Years Ago This Month' thread, you can follow a season which at the beginning of January 1959 started off with us in a similar position to January 2019 ; by the end of March it had gone in a totally different direction, with a great Cup run, but a couple of league defeats in March leaving us with too much to do to catch up. There were 2 positives:
1. A Cup run was more important than the league at that time, in terms of prestige, size of crowds, level of excitement..
2. 60 years ago almost to the day, we appointed a largely unknown manager from a club in the lower leagues (John Harris, from Chester). In his second year of managing us in the Second Division, he took us to promotion to the top division, and went on to be a club legend. If me or someone else keeps that thread going, you will be able to follow the 1960-61 promotion campaign match by match. Patience is a virtue...

Why are we only allowed to talk about promotion when it is confirmed?

Exactly. Nobody’s saying we are promoted yet it’s just a comparison with other seasons where we were.

Not much point comparing it with seasons where we finished mid-table.

I was lucky enough to be at nearly all of the games home & away, in 1971, 1990, and 2006, and one thing I can say is that you certainly get a special promotion feeling , and kind of know it's going to happen, & I am feeling that now.
