I'll repeat what another poster said a couple of says ago.

How shit did Ched look in his first season? Our biggest transfer for years, and it looked like a complete waste of money.

The only difference then ,was that we had fans with patience, who didn't stag him off after 5 minutes.

We have some right entitled fannies in our current fanbase.
Evans was crap in the Championship and we got relegated.
He was a bit of a joke until he found his level in the third division.
Not the kind of patience we're hoping for with Cannon surely.

They did slag him off. It was not until Wilson just gave him free rein on the pitch that he came good. A player who wasn’t very bright and had difficulty playing to systems but was talented, he was then told to concentrate on what you are good at and was a very good player.
Ched was regularly slated I can clearly remember!

Wasn't until we dropped down a league that he found his form.

I think he was shit for two years wasn’t he?

And he could kick it really hard and the keepers in league one are a lot worse than in the championship

I'm seeing people claim Cannon wasn't £10 million but £4 million now. Obviously I think we're all happier if he was £4 million, though it does make us look even cheaper last January not splashing on a CB, I thought the argument was there was no money left after spunking £10m on Cannon?

Anyway as far as you're aware, was he £4m or nearer £10m?
Why does it matter really?

We bought him, he's on a long contract. We've probably signed someone else for nowt who's doing well.

He'll either contribute at some point or he won't 🤷‍♂️

Well if he only cost £4m I'd snap your hand off for £2m. If he cost £10m... would need to hold out for £4m.

The times I've seen Cannon look useful and effective (all be it half a dozen times maybe) he's played up top feeding off another striker.

He's barely done that here and when he did he looked better and scored in one game.

Can't that happening currently at all.

He's just a poacher. Doesn't contribute anything else. He'd score a few goals in a team that creates more chances, but not enough to make up for his lack of anything else.

I think I heard that about somebody else that Blackwell played on the wing.

Billy Summat. I wonder what came of him.

It’s his second season (technically) and he looks even more out of his depth. If that’s even physically possible.

As far as I am aware, it’s now a totally irrelevant question.

To be honest,to save everyone's sanity we should try our best to find a club to take Cannon on a season loan.He has had the look of a player who has had a serious bout of ‘transfer remorse’ ever since he arrived and was clearly not the managers choice.
It has now reached a ridiculous situation where the new manager is playing him as a winger, any confidence he had has now gone altogether.
He can’t pass, he can’t beat his man, he has zero awareness of what’s going on around him and my border collie has a better first touch. Get shot. Play Campbell, One and Jevan Beattie ahead of him if no one will take him.

Hard to argue with this TBH.

We were crying out for a CB and instead ignorantly decided to purchase/borrow more attackers.

No different to when JOC for injured, he was absolutely crucial to the system we were playing at the time being successful, and staggeringly we decided not to adequately replace him.

I'll always love Wilder for those four years, but given money to spend the was woeful. I think our best option over the summer would've been to keep Wilder and invest in a DOF/someone who is experienced and successful shopping in the markets we currently are. Historically we've always shopped in the bargain basements and it feels like as a club we just aren't comfortable when it comes to spotting and spending considerable sums of money.

It's a more deep rooted problem than just a manager, and ,despite the poor start, I'm hopeful they will get the next appointment right and steer the club in the direction of a Brighton or Brentford.
Wilder is great with getting the best out of players and building a winning team on a budget, supplementing with young loan players from top clubs who trust him to develop them. I disagreed with the club letting him go. Given funds though, he unfortunately has displayed the spending acumen of a lotto winner.

Any signs that he’s a ‘good lad’ and ‘loves playing for the club’?! That got the last expensive flop striker some kudos with the fans.

I agree I think Wilder is old school and likes to have full control. Given the choice between working within these parameters and being shown the exit, surely he would have fell in line.

I guess we will never know.
Talk around the ground is that the set up was explained to him and he was given that exact choice.

No one will know for sure until Danny Hall writes his third book about him.

Billy Sharp is and always has been light-years ahead of Tom Cannon off the ball

Do you actually believe that?

The Billy Sharp we had for his third spell, had evolved into a target man, with excellent team working skills, but his game was still predominantly about goals.

Canon is 22, about the same age as Billy in his second spell. At that point Billy had not developed into the player he would become. To make matters worse, both Blackwell and Robson stuck him on the wing, much like this idiot is doing with Canon.

I'm not saying that Canon will be Billy Mark II, but we really couldn't come up with a better plan to make him look shit.

Aye, all speculation at this point.

Regardless, we've made a fucking mess of things appointing Selles.

He would of personally toed the line, but his stooges , Witt etc would be doing all the could to upset the apple cart, for that reason alone Wilder had to go , whether it was the correct time is another matter.

No idea…though I usually assume the public figure (£10 million in this case) to be the final figure with all conditions met.

So it’s possible the £4 million figure is what we’ve paid so far and that will rise with appearances etc. 🤷‍♂️

Yes I do. Sharp wasn't just stood on the goal-line at 22 years old. He had work-rate, football intelligence and could impact himself on a game. When Cannon is on the pitch, we're down to 10 men.

Depends if you cost the lost revenue from getting promoted if we'd spent the money on a quality CB instead.

Given that half the fans say £4m was enough to beat Sunderland in a bidding war. And half the fans say it was £10m to "win" his signature... shall we just split the difference and agree he cost £7m?
