I'm seeing people claim Cannon wasn't £10 million but £4 million now. Obviously I think we're all happier if he was £4 million, though it does make us look even cheaper last January not splashing on a CB, I thought the argument was there was no money left after spunking £10m on Cannon?

Anyway as far as you're aware, was he £4m or nearer £10m?

4 million up front.
2 million extra if he scored 10 goals before the end of the season.
2 million extra if we got promoted to the PL.

All the above are guesses, in the same way anyone else who 'quotes' a figure is a guess. Unless they are TC's agent or the club.

Though I suspect that is how 'deals' are structured.

Chris Wilder detractors will swear that we have wasted 10 million though.

Don't forget the wages in addition.

The internet can't cope with grey realism, so it opts for black or white to support whichever point it is trying to bolster.

To be honest,to save everyone's sanity we should try our best to find a club to take Cannon on a season loan.He has had the look of a player who has had a serious bout of ‘transfer remorse’ ever since he arrived and was clearly not the managers choice.
It has now reached a ridiculous situation where the new manager is playing him as a winger, any confidence he had has now gone altogether.

I'd guess that it will end up being about 8m, and that only performance related add ons would have taken it to 10 - which will obviously never be triggered

I also think it was a signing mainly driven by the new owners in some sort of idiotic impulsive dick waving exercise. It's consistent with the sort of behaviour they're displaying now. They also shat themselves about Sunderland being interested which makes it very funny that they ended up beating us at Wembley while Cannon was barely good enough to get on the pitch and didn't even deserve his place on the bench

Those backing Wilder say it's nearer £4m or wasn't his doing, those who don't claim it's nearer £10m, either way it's poor business like Brewster, Freeman & Mcburnie, Wilder is excellent at picking up players for nothing and honing them into decent lads, but he's out of his depth when it comes to spending big, like a lottery winner getting excited at what he can have. Guess we'll never know what then true cost of these transfers are ,but it's a lot of money wasted

I'll repeat what another poster said a couple of says ago.

How shit did Ched look in his first season? Our biggest transfer for years, and it looked like a complete waste of money.

The only difference then ,was that we had fans with patience, who didn't stag him off after 5 minutes.

We have some right entitled fannies in our current fanbase.

Is he in though? I'm sure someone a while back did a forensic breakdown and Wilder was about industry average when it comes to these things.

For every David McGoldrick there's a Ravel Morrison. For every Mark Duffy there's a Samir Caruthers. For every Harrison Burrows there's a Max Lowe...

This narrative that he could pick a diamond in the rough from the depths of the football league is nonsense.

Oh for a prime David McGoldrick now ...

Ched looked crap because we spent his first season hoofing balls up to his head. When we actually played to his strengths he was a success.
We have a history of this, buying players that are successful in a certain system and style but then using them in a completely different way and wondering why they aren’t successful.
If we are going to keep the manager and he has a system, then we need to buy players that are comfortable in that system.
Hamer could be a good example. On his day and in the right system he is top end Championship player. Currently he is playing like a mid to bottom end player. So we have the choice, adapt the system or get rid and buy, possibly individually lesser players, but who fit the system and will make the team stronger.

Exactly!

We bought a fox in the box, and in true Robson/Blackwell style, keep sticking him on the wing.

Maybe Canon won't make it at the Lane, but some of the wetwipes on here can't wait to put the boot in.

How much did Cannon cost us?

Too much!
4 touches in the first 5 minutes 3 to The opposition and one foul.
Pick someone of the kop they will do better.

Just saying

With Wilder and Bettis and fees involved it has to be the brain dead option
Almost every one was in or out.
Disastrous waste of our money and the best crop of young players we have had since the sixties

I wouldn’t hide the fact that I would have kept Wilder.

Spending big was really an Achilles heal.

If he’d used that deal (or whomever made the deal) on Tanganga instead of Cannon, we’d be a Premier League club now.
Hard to argue with this TBH.

We were crying out for a CB and instead ignorantly decided to purchase/borrow more attackers.

No different to when JOC for injured, he was absolutely crucial to the system we were playing at the time being successful, and staggeringly we decided not to adequately replace him.

I'll always love Wilder for those four years, but given money to spend the was woeful. I think our best option over the summer would've been to keep Wilder and invest in a DOF/someone who is experienced and successful shopping in the markets we currently are. Historically we've always shopped in the bargain basements and it feels like as a club we just aren't comfortable when it comes to spotting and spending considerable sums of money.

It's a more deep rooted problem than just a manager, and ,despite the poor start, I'm hopeful they will get the next appointment right and steer the club in the direction of a Brighton or Brentford.

This would have made sense, but I’m not sure Wilder would have been prepared to stay under and be answerable to a DoF. That’s a big part of the state we are now in. My biggest wish is that the owners appoint a DoF.

I agree I think Wilder is old school and likes to have full control. Given the choice between working within these parameters and being shown the exit, surely he would have fell in line.

I guess we will never know.

Ched only came good in League 1 though, we probably don’t want to get relegated just to see if Cannon is any good at a lower level.

So our only outlay will be 4m then??!

They did slag him off. It was not until Wilson just gave him free rein on the pitch that he came good. A player who wasn’t very bright and had difficulty playing to systems but was talented, he was then told to concentrate on what you are good at and was a very good player.
