Tbf, none of us have seen that much of Smith. But Wilder's a big fan, & he made the Div 4 Team of the Year last season.

Yes, there's a howler or two on the clips. So there would be if you saw highlights of, say, Kaspar Schmeichel's performances in Leicester's promotion season.

I'm presuming that Smith's positive contribution (rather than merely being OK or average) more than compensates for the few errors. And that his confidence is good & that his head doesn't drop when he happens to make a mistake.

Him and George competing & pushing each other on, with Ramsdale in reserve, sounds good to me.

Let's just sign an experienced goalkeeper. There are enough of them out there who'd love to be our number 1.

In what way, though, would Long's standard of keeping compete and push anyone along? Except perhaps another very poor keeper? Personally, I think one of those is too many already.

I don't think Smith is any better than Long. Both great shot stoppers and iffy with the rest.

Since when was Long a "great" shot stopper? Not shots from 25-30 yards he isn't! When he does stop a shot it's often a novice parry back into danger. He's also particularly weak on his near post. All things considered, he's rather a poor shot-stopper in my view.

Well, it was more probably 10 in all honesty.

I was a bit harsh about Wilder but my point about 'over-promising' still stands.(an no, over-promising doesn't necessarily relate to a promise)

I just think it's wiser to say less or be more vague about timescales unless you know you can deliver.

It's not a major thing and doesn't really reflect on his ability as a manager but he'll find it being used against him if things aren't going well.

Yes. By you.

Oh, can you run that "over-promising" contradiction past us again?...

You'd have to hope he'd raise his game if his place was under threat. He needs to "kick on" & maybe he needs a kick up the arse to get him to do it.

I do think there's a very decent keeper in there, as shown by all those MOM performances when he came back into the first team to replace Howard - significantly at a time when his place wasn't secure & he was fighting to be no.1.

Don't care who it is as long as he is confident, vocal, willing to wipe out his own defence to get to a ball and above all able to concentrate sufficiently to spot and anticipate a shot coming from 25/30 yards. It's that "oh fuck" moment with George where he realises it's on its way but his feet haven't moved that upsets me. Half a second loss on a ball travelling at 60mph is around 15 yards I think (whatever, it's enough) and that's enough to screw you.

I've said it before on here, Long is a decent enough keeper at this level. If he stopped every shot, claimed every cross, and made absolutely every decision correct, he would not be playing for Sheffield United in League One. For me, there are more important places to spend money.

How many more do we NEED to sign before the Bolton game, or how many more WILL we sign before the Bolton game ??

I would suggest that we need; GK, CH, CM, CF and a winger to be competitive this season, plus another midfield if Adams is sold.

Its a question of how many will actually be signed :tumbleweed:

UTB & FTP

This. Without these, we are weak - realistically, a top 10-12 side and certainly not promotion front runners.

I'm really pleased with all our recruitment this summer thus far but many of these are just bodies in to give the squad depth and in many ways with each signing that arrives, I'm pleased (as with Clarke) but I still have the mentality of "that's great, well done United, but let's back to those that we actually need to improve the squad".

Saw the Clarke news, was happy, then thought right crack on for a right sided CB and a CM because we need those more urgently!! No time for being all cheery and celebratory over Clarke's arrival whilst we are so lacking in other areas. If we start the season without those spots filled, it'll have still been an unimpressive summer for recruitment, for me.
