Just a means for discussion.

Before you start - with the thread title I'm not implying any belief that we won't get promoted, I'm interested with Clough getting the best part of 2 seasons to take us up before he was shown the door.

Will Adkins be any different if (heaven forbid) things don't go to plan this season?

I think Clough went because of how far off target he was given how much was spent. From interviews they seemed annoyed about his numerous fallouts with players 'stubborness' when it came to tactics and team selection. At the time I wasn't sure but I've changed my mind as I think Adkins is a major improvement.
They seem to understand the importance of long term planning and I would hope that Adkins is here for the long haul.

As much as I liked Clough and appreciated all he did, his league form in the second season was avoidably weak. And I think the board concluded he wasn't flexible enough to sort it out inside their timescales.

I'm interested to know if they had their eye on Adkins when sacking Clough. It didn't seem so at the time what with the reports of approaching Parkinson, but Adkins' CV is so compelling I'd have been tempted to make that swap in their position.

How long will he get?
Impossible to say, depends how we get on this season in terms of performances and how close we finish (and what inevitable bad luck the football gods shit down on us).

How long should he get?
Til the end of next season, minimum. We need to support and get behind a proven successful manager. We've not had that in recent memory, so we ought to make the most of it.

As the average time in the Championship is 7 months I don't know how you can put a time or answer on it. If a manager starts a job in July does he expect to buy a team that he wants and be flying high in January or be sacked in February. I wouldnt take a job if I thought ide get the sack in 7 months. And nor would you. Football is no different . Social media has a lot to answer for in my opinion. Life is not Team Manager and realism and commonsense should be brought back......Funny old game Saint. But actually its quite serious. And the people managing and running clubs are professionals. I would seriously pack it all in if it gets any worse. Some were saying sack the manager after the Gillingham game .....Do you get my point?

However a very interesting and topical question.

I backed Warnock for 7 years

I backed Blackwell right up to the end

I was glad to see Clough go when he did because he turned into a bit of a nob.

Unless a major disaster occurs then I'll happily give Adkins 2 years at the very least.

Given that no manager at the lane gets more than two years, if Adkins fails to get promotion he'll be sacked either at the end of the season or early next.

Collins will be welcomed back in again and probably cry on camera saying how much he loves the club. He'll then take over as player manager

People who cry to keep their jobs, a special type of twat.

This is another footballing myth, to me.

Managers do not fear the sack.

I, along with all mangers no doubt, would love to be offered a guaranteed 3 years pay knowing I'll probably have to work only 7 months to get it, in full.

He will get 2 years, at least. We employed a failure before. When it went off the rails, it was impossible to have the faith that he would get it back on track. It was all so predictable, sadly.

We now have the best manager we will ever get in this position.

I will bare my arse in the town hall steps if Adkins gets sacked before the end of next season.:)

To be honest not knocking you OP but I don't even want to think about it.

The modern game is a horrible, fickle one and I think the expectations of fans these days are much higher than they have ever been. Obvious our expectations are probably higher than the fans of a good few clubs because we are desperate to get back to our steady championship status.

On things is for sure with us and that is that we are a very big club that is punching below it's weight. The media and the bookmakers set us up for a fall by stating the obvious and making us promotion favourites, they know and we know that we should be out of this league by now. On paper we have one of the better squads in the league as well which heaps on ever more pressure.

If we get a few bad results on the trot then we as fans get frustrated, the media then standby with a big bag of fuel to throw on the fire. The sly dogs then taunt of for a reaction and get us all worked up more and before you know it people are calling for heads.

It's hard to say how long he will last. He has a job to do it is as simple as that and at the minute however short live, he is performing in line with what we expect from him. Should he carrying on performing in line with the objectives of the club, fans and the media (sad but true) then people will stay off of his back and let him get on with it.

I am personally confident that he has what it takes to carve out a career for himself at Sheffield United. An attacking mentality and looking to score goals will get him points. He knows what he's doing as he has done it so many times before.

If we went up this year how long do we reckon he'd get in championship. If we finished 4th bottom would we be happy and then build from there?

I would be fine as long as we stay up. With growing expectations the following seasons.

Hypothetical question. He will get us up, twice in successive seasons (fingers and legs crossed). I can put up with us not winning matches. It was knowing that the game was going to be boring and we will be disappointed before the kick off that got me in the end with Clough.

At least we are going into matches with hope and effort from the players under Atkins. I actually saw Unitedites smiling at Peterborough before and after the match.

After 5 years in this sodding division, if he gets us up this season I'd be really pissed off if there was ANY move to get rid of him in the season after, even if, god forbid, we came back down. I hate it when clubs do that to a manager that gets them out of the shit. Like Southampton did with Adkins and City with Joe Royle. Small time Charlton got what they deserved when they thought they were big time and wanted Curbishley out.

Bit of a non-topic in my view. Who knows or cares. I was not in favour of sacking Clough but having seen what Adkins has done so far I now believe it was the right decision. Clough's shortcomings have been brought into sharp focus. Let's hope Adkins gets us up this season and then worry about next season's manager then.

spot on actually - we are analysing the far end of a fart as they say

Me too. Back to back is almost unheard of and it'll take time. Hope he gets a few years It does happen.

if you do get relegated you're
getting rid of the man who has a proven track record of getting back up. Look at where we ended up after getting rid of warnock and wolves with mccarthy

I reckon if we fail to get promoted this season he will get the sack. I hope not though as I would like him to get another season.

What if Primcess Diana had decided to get her own taxi?
What if Saddam Hussain and George Bush decided to resolve their differences over a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors
What if Clayton McDonald decided Rhyl was a bit of a shithole and gave it a swerve.
What if Cilla Black hadn't died, what would she be doing now?
What if Peter Sutclife heard God tell him to be nice to prostitutes?
