Any good abuse come his way last night? Hoping for some pelters.

There was a chant of 'Sacked in the morning' and one of 'Give us a wave'. When he failed to wave he got a chorus of 'Kevin Blackwell is a wanker'.

Much better was the abuse directed at a kid in a stupid bucket hat. 'He's got a lampshade on his head', 'We don't like your hat (to who ate all the pies) and 'take your hat off for the lads' amongst the highlights.

Edwards had a little dig on the radio in the first few minutes. It wasn't much but it made me chuckle.

Something along the lines of 'I thought it had been a while since I'd seen a team play a lone striker, you can tell it's one of our former managers'.

I loved the lampshade chant. I was sat right at the side of their fans there, and particularly enjoyed some of the banter. I thought it would have been funnier if we had chanted 'Blackwell in' though!

Yeah lets all abuse a former manager who did his best for us and almost got us to the Prem. Really don't see why people hate Blackwell so much, yes his footy was boring but he was a good servant to our club

Think you've hit the nail on your own head there Ted.

Oh and don't forget the chairman pulling the rug from under him mid season. Hated his football but McCabe must take an ample share of the blame for that one.

Boring but quite successful, I just dont see that as a reason to hate the guy.

I used to be sympathetic, but now we're reaping the whirlwind of not reducing our costs under Birch/Blackwell, I'm suddenly less forgiving... The day after Wembley our wage bill should have been halved and Blackwell should have left to facilitate that.

Can't say I hate him, but he was part of the problem.

The only past manager I have a hatred of is that utter twat Robson who destroyed our club. Blackwell did his best to fix it.

Precisely this. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Did you not go to the play off final ,where he was so far out of his depth and he knew it ,or the game at Doncaster where 4000 Blades sang Gary speeds red and white army as he drowned ? See how many of his ex players sign for him ,that will tell you a lot.

Yes I did go to the PO final, all of them. Who was the manager who got us there in the first place? Gary Speed was shit as a manager but everyone loves him, is that just because of what happened to him. Would you all be hating him too if he were still alive. Or is it because we had higher expectations for Blackwell after his successful stint as Warnocks no. 2

No, it's because he failed to get us promoted in the first full season with the best squad we've had in my lifetime, and in that division at the time.

This lead to the big sales, and his permanent transfers in left alot to be desired:

Jamie Ward
Leigh Bromby
Brian Howard
Steve Simonsen
James Harper
Mark Yeates
Mihkel Aksalu
Henri Camara
Ched Evans
Andy Taylor
Lee Williamson
Kyel Reid
Ryan France
Glen Little
Jon Fortune
Richard Wright
Marc Warren
Johnny Ertl
Richard Cresswell
Jordan Stewart
Stephen Jordan
Daniel Bogdanovic
Leon Britton
Rob Kozluk

Plus 16 players we had on loan during his time here, which wasn't completely his fault.

I'll never forget one drunk Daz telling Blackwell what he thought one night! :D

So funny! :D

Well said. Painfully boring (a bit like this season), but he did his best and better than many others.

Question.

Did Blackwell inherit (From Warnock / Robson) one of the best and most expensively assembled UTD squads in most of our lifetimes ?

If the answer to the above is yes, then I believe it is fair for me to say that Blackwell's "success" was in no small part down to the "good"work of those that went before him.

Now.

What happened when Blackwell really started to put his own mark on the squad (about 12-24 months after taking charge) ? And while it is accepted that certain players of genuine quality were sold in this period, Blackwell WAS allowed to re invest a large chunk of the proceeds to form his "own" squad.

Get your head round this and it is my opinion that you start to see the bloke for the complete **** that he really is and is the main (not only) reason we are now plying our trade in division 3.

In short, the rot had well and truly set in with this man at the helm and we have been paying the price ever since.

UTB.

Obviously you cant kick it right hard and high or you would have been given a contract :)

Excellent win percentage, one of our highest ever wasn't it?

Yeah but you didn't recognise him and thought he was related to Uncle Neil!

Ahem, yes, but he didn't hold that against me. Might just have to briefly tell the tale.

It was the day of that game against Leeds, the one in the Worthington Cup when Jags scored THAT goal, and I'd hitched as far as Luton, Junction 11 on the M1. Wearing my bright yellow Blades away shirt I wasn't surprised when a silver Merc with a Sheaf Motors sticker in the rear windscreen stopped, assuming as I did that it was a fellow Blade having spotted the shirt.

Just to make sure, I said to the driver, "I'm going to Sheffield."

"I know!" came the reply.

"To the match," I continued.

"I know," said the driver, following up with, "You don't know who I am do you?"

I looked a bit closer and established that like our Neil, this gent had a bit of nose like a wallwalker (1970s kids), and at the time John Warnock had just started working for the Academy, so I said, "You look like you might be a member of the Warnock family."

With a touch of incredulity the driver replied, "I'm Kevin Blackwell!"

Luckily I was by now strapped in and ready to go, so abandonment on the slip road was unlikely, and as flannel is a Bell Family trait, I immediately started on reparation by pointing out that my seat was in the South Stand so "all I ever get to see of you is the back of your head as you stand at the side of the pitch shouting at the players."

I later gave him the chance to feel good about himself by pointing out that on Viewpoints (1970s kids now in the 21st Century) there were some that held the belief that Warnock was just a figurehead and that he himself, Kevin Blackwell, was the tactical genius behind our performances. Whilst he didn't confirm this suggestion, he didn't deny it either.

Funny to think in the current climate that messageboards were alive with such suggestions and ideas; Kevin Blackwell, tactical genius.
