Read an article from Alan Biggs from the star asking as to why we/other teams wait until players die before giving them the proper respect that they deserve.

I've seen videos of Tony Currie and Alan Woodward in particular from my dad Silent Blade and have seen how amazing the players both were.

Why did we honour Jessica Ennis with the stand (after winning the gold medal) when she is a fan but has never done anything directly for the club. I understand that alone is a fantastic achievement, but was it really something that she was grateful for, was it something she'd always wanted? Probably not.

Dave Bassett, the greatest manager for the Blades, why didn't we/don't we rename a stand after him?

Why don't we rename a stand after Currie & Woodward, or any other players?

If this does happen then it will probably happen when they pass away, but why don't we do it now? Why haven't we done it before?

Wilder certainly respects our legendary club members, so wouldn't it be an ideal time for them to be given one of the greatest honours this club could give after they have provided us with some of the best years of United' history?
 



I read the article - Got me thinking that it might be difficult to find future legends for us.

Admittedly we are not the only club in this situation but if someone comes in / does brilliantly from the academy they stay for a season and we sell them on. They don't get a chance to achieve that status

Has there been a player in the last 20 years that would get that type of status now? Jags maybe?

Think the best hope would be managers like Warnock / wilder if he builds on his start here

There was someone in a FB group who posted a photo of himself and Dave Bassett and he said "Greatest ever manager we have had" I replied with "second to John Harris", he then replied "He was voted as our best manager ever". I replied with

"I didnt vote and many 50 or over year olds wouldnt have. Cantona was voted Man U's greatest ever player instead of Charlton, Best or Law tells you that the majority of voters for these kind of polls are from a younger generation which is why I didnt vote in our club's 125 anniversary awards. Dont know the exact figures but I expect that less than 20% of "active" Blades fans remember the years under Harris and probably more than 60% remember the years under Bassett which is why polls like these are flawed. TC would have been my choice as "best player" but I didnt vote because I felt it would have been unfair for the likes of Needham, Gillespie and Hagan. Harris managed us in the top division for nine and half seasons which is a better achievement than Bassett's four. Warnock and Bassett both agreed at the 125 awards that Harris was "unlucky" not to be voted first"

Well it's only like saying in general our country has loads of 'heroes' alive or dead but yet we still name buildings after foreign terrorists like Nelson Mandela instead :-/
 
In the 'Old photographs...' thread there was a photo of the Blades 1965 including Archie Clark.
Now probably many supporters of a certain age would never have even heard of him.
But it made me think what value in today's money you could put on the talent Archie unearthed in the Don and Dearne Valley.

Recognition should extend beyond players and managers.
 
I would rate Harris as our best ever manager, but he won the grand total of zero trophies, same as every other of our managers since we first had a proper one. In that sense, he's the "tallest dwarf".

There is no United manager worthy of having a stand named after him.

There are a number of players I might consider for a statue in place of Dooley (which I would stick in Sheffield city centre in a heartbeat). I would rank our 3 best players of all time as Needham, Hagan and Currie, with TC having no contest as our greatest living ex player. Any of these guys could be commemorated in bronze for me.

Fantastic idea. We could offer it to our friends at Sheffield City Council as a gesture of thanks for the great support we have received from them over the years.

I'd guess there's a fair few on here that don't recognise him. For greater recognition wouldn't it help if you named him rather than referring to your avatar?

I assume it's Nudger but it's a small picture on my phone.

You are being sincere and fair minded, so this is making me look very silly. I reckon if I sneak off for 5 minutes, no-one will notice.

I wouldn't vote on such a poll either as I don't feel qualified having not been around during the Harris era. I only feel able to offer opinions on my time watching the blades during which Bassett was the best followed by Warnock. But by the accounts of those who watched Harris' sides, he surpassed 'Arry.

The best title would be "The best Blade player you saw" rather than "Best ever Blade player" and in the voting slip you state the year you became a Blade. In that case Jimmy Hagan, TC and Woody would get a higher percentage rather than a number of votes

Yeah true. For me, it would be Deano but those that have seen TC seem to rate him higher and those that saw Hagan seem to rate him even higher.

In 2000 I did a BU poll on "Best Blade X1" and asked each voter to state the year they became a Blade. Jimmy Hagan got 3 votes but got a score of 100 per cent as these three voters were the only ones that took part in the poll that had seen Jimmy Hagan play before he retired in 1957. TC got 100 per cent too and Woody was 90 odd percent. Deane got a high percentage but not as high as Hagan, TC and Woody because some voters thought Doc Pace and/or Mick Jones was better than Deane

Also a 2 time FA Cup winner with The Blades, played for England wrote a revolutionary book on football tactics and played first class cricket for Derbyshire. He is our equivalent to Steve Bloomer, who is venerated still at Derby and known by all supporters young and old. Yet we have to stick up a wiki link for Needham. Shameful!
