Hodgson (no not that one) Billy

I think the only tie at Newcastle in that era was in 1960-1. A different Billy, Billy Russell, scored all 3 goals in a 3-1 win, all in the 1st 20 minutes.

Little Billy Hodgson was a great player to watch. He entertained the crowd with many other little performances too. Two that come to mind were when the gusset of his shorts were once accidentaly ripped from a "robust challenge", he held his shorts like a little ballet skirt and did a "fairy dance" down the touchline to amuse the crowd. Another incident that I remeber was when he challeged Aston Villa's goalkeeper Nigel Simms (who was 6 feet plus and about 20+stones). Billy was about 5 feet 2 inches (with two pairs of socks on) but he attempted 2 consecutive shoulder charges (admissable in those days) resulting in him being "belly bounced" onto his backside by Simms. Both incidents bringing great cheers from both sets of supporters.

Another character and good player from the past.
If I remember correctly he played when we had Hawksworth and often had to be content playing inside left due to the consistency of Hawksworth.
A small robust player Billy Hodgson was and a true Blade.
