Having once again enjoyed my weekly highlights...

1. First pen - defense cut wide open, Britton miles behind the runner brings him down with clumsy contact from behind. Totally needless penalty, shoddy.
2. Second pen - ball blasted at two defenders sliding out. Hard to see if it hit a hand. Shouldn't have been given, but again shoddy marking.
3. Cresswell - late in tackle and into shins/ ankle area, probably deserved it. Cresswell looked slow and lethargic in highlights, is he injured? Three games out might help.
4. Highlights didn't show Bristol tackle where Edwards called ref a "coward" for chickening out.
5. Third goal was a huge push on Simonsen. Should have been a foul.
6. Super long range chip by Evans. Is that guy unlucky or what? Must have hit the woodwork ten times this year.

in summary. We looked crap. Defense is disorganised and don't talk to each other, and attack is rushed and desperate e.g. Quinns desperately poor shot on goal when clean through.

Bit harsh on the back four when we didn't concede in open play. I thought Noz played well at the weekend however,Lowton looked out of his depth(hope this was a one off).Taylor was competant !!!!

Quinn's miss was offiside so wouldn't have counted.

The tackle on Lowton in the first half was late and over the top...very similar to Lowton's tackle on the Cardiff player at the beginning of the season when he got a red card.

Simmo was claiming he was pushed but the players just walked away so I assumed he was covering himself. I've not seen the highlights so maybe he has an excuse for that one...otherwise he did OK

Likewise!

The pubs in Clifton pre-match were very good and as per usual a good selection of local ales which provided the real highlight which led to us missing the 1st 15 mins of the game and not being arsed about what went on in the remainder.

If a player uses his arms to make himself bigger when trying to block a shot, and the ball hits an outstretched arm, should a pen be given?

I defy anyone to run around a football pitch with their arms at their sides. Especially when throwing themselves into a challenge.

The handball law is horrible to implement. It invloves the ref making decisions about what the player was intending. Was he deliberately making himself bigger (oo-err), or is he just a bit flappy like James Harper?

Yes.

The Laws of the game state:

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be
careless, reckless or using excessive force:
• kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
• trips or attempts to trip an opponent
• jumps at an opponent
• charges an opponent
• strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
• pushes an opponent
• tackles an opponent
A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following three offences:
• holds an opponent
• spits at an opponent
handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own
penalty area)

So what was deliberate about that handball?

Yes, it's often difficult, and fans are rarely neutral. When a player finds himself free in the area I think it's fair that he should have a go at goal without the opposition players being free to act like a goalkeeper when trying to block the shot. But as you say footballers can't keep their arms at their sides all the time, hence the exoression "arms in a natural position" being used sometimes.

For this goal we have left the shooter unmarked, two players rush out to block his shot and Quinn succeeds by stopping the ball with an hand raised above his head. It's probably debatable, but the ref is entitled to give it.

Maybe we should focus more on why the shooter was left unmarked while we had four players going for the same ball (the swung in corner)?
