It's been discussed before on this forum after the Watford game; when he failed to anticipate the ball over the top and was slow off his line and when he did come off it he didn't fully commit and was stranded in no man's land and was beaten at his near post.

Every keeper makes mistakes, and yes he has saved us (forgive the pun) more points than lost. But if he is to become a top class keeper and this part of the game has to improve. He first made this 'error' against Leicester earlier on in the season for Vardy's first (granted Basham was more responsible then).

It happened again today. Now in mitigation he perhaps didn't want to hurl himself at the ball as was aware he was the sub keeper, we were winning 2-0 and it is an FA Cup game which would pale in significance should he get injured and it was a fine finish.

Nevertheless it's the third time this season that he has been conceded this sort of goal that I've seen. Something that he needs continuous training on that I'm sure that he's getting.

He could do much worse than try to learn from the best in world football at this skill:

He correctly noped out of it because he would've got absolutely clattered.

Nowhere near a mistake, just made a decision for the benefit of the league.

Perhaps. Once or twice is unfortunate in a season, though when it happens three times I start to wonder if there is a theme regardless of the circumstances.

'Mistake' is too harsh a word hence the ' ' marks, but regardless of today he does need improving on this area in his game IMHO.

Though going back to today, if he didn't want to injure himself why did he even bother coming out to no man's land? Should have just stayed in net.

I do think he's improved on this since last season, but it's an area where improvement comes from experience.

Think he could have done more for the goal against Watford on boxing day. He got caught at his near post after hesitating then being stuck in no man's land

If that happens with us 1-0 up against city at the end of the month, I'd expect Henderson to go in a lot more committed.

As it is he's the only fit goalie at the club for Friday so he gets a pass on this one from me

Possibly only fit keeper at the club and you criticise him for not wanting to get injured ffs man

Verrips looked stunned when it happened but he looked disappointed that the training staff wanted him off.
Probably off with a concussion protocol rather than a definite injury.

He had a long conversation with Wilder before coming on today. I thought at the time that it was probably "if it's a 50/50 Deano, DO NOT get involved, we can't afford to lose you as well at this point of the season".

Wilder was right and so was Deano to let the forward get there first today. No harm done and on to Friday night.

Three areas of weakness. 1. Distribution. Not fatal. Comes with time. 2. Near post. Said to be unforgivable for a keeper, but I think where he has been caught out here comes from the third weakness. 3. Starting position. Maybe he's had it easy on his way up and doesn't have to concentrate, but he doesn't stand as far out in anticipation of the ball over the top or between the centre backs as he should and has been caught in no mans land, retreating and if not retreating flat footed. He needs to move up, out and back in rhythm with his back three all game but he doesn't. This leaves him not set with his position or angles on a quick break.

Still, he's young and he's bloody good. Just not perfect yet.

Wilder will have applauded Henderson for doing what he did for their goal and rightly so. We would have rather lost the game then lose him to a long term injury.

ffs man you didn't read the op properly.

He should have stayed on his line rather than go to no-man's land if he wasn't going to subsequently commit. Wilder himself said he was disappointed with the goal.

Constructive comments are not slagging the player off, but then if you read the op properly you would have seen that.

looking at it again I think he was slow off his line because at the time of decision their player had ours around him it wasnt till he realised the lousy cover to come out by then it was too late. Anyway as I said in another thread he's due another howler and to have it done in this game will get it out his system better than it being in a league game.

Onwards and upwards.

(I`m an ex goalie by the way)

It took several seconds for the Fylde player to latch on to the through ball, which he did 8 yards from goal.

That’s unacceptable in Concord Park !!

I’d have thought that was the case too but apparently its a rib injury ? 🤷🏻‍♂

When the ball was put over, there were 4 defenders running back, no need for hendo to come out, until the all decided to slow down and allow their man through

I guarantee he throws himself at that if it's a league game.

He just didn't want to get injured. It will have been his main instruction.
Exactly this ! As the ball was played over the top and he started to come out I held my breath as it was clearly a 50/50 ball, the striker got there, no collision, the ball went in the net and I breathed out.

If he collided with the striker and got the ball/free kick but takes a heavy blow and gets injured, we beat Fylde 2-0, start with Jags in goal on Friday and everyone says why did he do it.

In the interest of balance, here's a couple of videos of Neuer fuck-ups. Enjoy.

If Henderson turns out to be half as good as one of the best goalkeepers this century with a world cup medal we'll be alright.

He should have stayed on his line if he wasn't coming out properly for it.

I haven't seen any of the match yet but understand your concern and agree. Myself I believe 'Hendo' is a major part of what's being done at the club and wouldn't want him to leave, it may be these short comings could work in United's favour.
When all's said and done he a very good keeper of his day like the rest of them today with their misgivings older supporters such as myself and probably yourself see. Lack of hand use, area dominance, not leaving there line when necessary and when they do stop half way. Why come out to narrow the angle then stop. Got to go all the way, still narrowing angle, finally either clattering attacker or putting him off.
With his personality and footballing ability he's a larger part, as are others, of the many parts that make up the whole of United's present squad. This in mind I hope he stays for a few seasons to come, I'll live with the hic ups if he does.

Hes bleeding rubbish!

Please don't force me to use the reductio ad absurdum link

;)

No-one is saying he's rubbish so no need to exaggerate, just constructive feedback which I'm sure he'll really value from FMBlade1 on a forum.

We could have been in a situation of having no fit goalkeepers in our nominated squad 5 day’s before our next Premier League game if he’d gone for it and got clattered. At the time I said it looked like he’d held back a bit and was probably under instruction not to take risks and I still stand by it. It’s fine margins with supporters, sure he’d get a pat on the back for getting clattered if he saved it and came out unscathed, but if he’d got himself injured, there’s every chance that there’d be threads and Tweets berating him for risking our PL status for a ‘nothing’ game.
