Thought this was worth pointing out as an emerging theme.

We’ve lost Souza, an imposing starter.

We’re losing Moore, probably one of the best two ‘zone men’ we’ve seen, alongside McBurnie, who we also won’t have.

Whilst he’s not superimposing, Anel is still 6’5” and has been the defender to bag a couple on pre-season.

I hope this is something Selles is on. I don’t want to see us be all nice and aggressive at pressing and then get picked off at free kicks and corners at will.

Soumaré is about an inch taller than Souza but it’s not sure he will be a starter. Iroegbunam is 6” exactly so we potentially might lose some height there if he does come.

If Bindon replaces Anel, then whilst he’s not small, he’s 6’2” to Anel’s 6’5”.

There’s few forwards as big as Kieffer Moore.

Hope we don’t lose sight of this and become a soft touch.

It's just shows just been reading derby set to sign 9th player we sign 3 on loan and sell 3 but some fans being accused of bedwetting really!!.

Has the quality of our squad been improved by the 3 loans signings ? Has Derby signed anyone approaching the same quality ?
I am confident that we are moving in the right direction and am largely ambivalent as to what happens in the first half dozen matches. It’s what happens in the remaining 40 that will be crucial.

They've signed 9 players but aren't even close to being as good as us.

There's no point us signing players that aren't good enough... Is there?

We've learned to be patient in recent seasons as we're lucky that we shop in the very niche markets of; (1) nearly/hopefully good enough for Top 4 in the Championship quality, (2) has Prem potential quality.

We've all learnt to be patient...

We’ve been quite unconvincing from defending corners and set pieces for a couple of seasons. It’s definitely an area we need to strengthen in and like you say, selling players with height is just going to make us more vulnerable from crosses into the box.

You're right. We need to have the aggression and fitness for the pressing game, but we also need to be able to handle teams that will target set pieces and play more directly.

Wrexham for example with Moore could cuse us problems.

We need to be able to fight different battles with different personnel.

Team of midgets is a bit harsh but you can't argue with it looking at the current starting XI

…perhaps not all !!!

It’s been the same for at least 5 years. Until we signed Souttar we were absolutely awful attacking & defending set pieces. Probably have to go back to O’Connell for the last solid defender that could head a ball.

Not too worried about losing Moore or Souza, they had the same ability as Berge where they seemed to get shorter every time they challenged for a header.

Anel was pretty poor in the air, decidedly worse than Robinson

For all the height we've lost how many goals did Souttar, Anel and Moore score from set pieces? Not many at all is the answer. Souttar seemed to get on the end of loads but never guided any into the net. For a man of his size and strength he was crap at heading the ball into the net.

Said the same , there is a lot of sides that will exploit this in the Championship particularly on set pieces unless we plug the gaps quickly . We had the same issue under Hecky in the PL .
Last season we had a very strong side physically & height wise , add Choudhury , BBD , Souttar & Gillchrist from last seasons the loanees who all were over 6ft to who are no longer at the club

Or, if we've had these bigger players and been poor, maybe those we had for all their height, weren't very good a defending set pieces?
Berge for example was a taller player, not an asset though if the ball was above chest height. Anel wasn't very good in the air and I could be wrong but I can't recall Souza being commanding in the air from crosses.

Which is why I wanted McBurnie back.

He's invaluable defending free kicks and corners.
Some would say, not having McBurnie back helps defending free kicks, as he seemed to give loads of free kicks away (some right and some very poor wrong decisions by the ref).

I've not seen any pre season games, although have heard about the high press.

Is this giving more free kicks away and if it is, are they higher up the pitch?

Do Selles teams give lots of free kicks away?

We know refs can/are poor, but if you don't give free kicks away in the wrong areas, then they are easier to defend.

(Then I remember JLT is still here 🤔)

Yeah, maybe. There were several occasions last season where the opposition had free headers, so they’re either losing individual battles or the tactics for defending set pieces isn’t working. Either way, hopefully it gets addressed for this season, if we’re a short team then I’m sure the opposition will be looking to expose that as a weakness.

Egan?

The first six matches points are as valuable as the last six matches points. At the end of the season the point total could mean promotion or not

It'd be like us getting our loans in, but only until the end of March as we'll be there or thereabouts then

Agreed, but the point I failed to make clear is that how we play once we have a full squad is more important than what happens in the four league matches before the window closes.
In a perfect world we would collect all the players needed by late July, but if we are to sign the best available players then the current system dictates that we have to wait. It is frustrating but that is the world in which we operate.

Look at how many players Derby sold/released before they signed anyone and how many players they needed before making the comparison.

Quantity does not mean quality. Our starting 11 is looking strong and only shy of one centre back now that Anel is gone.

Unless Soumare, Bindon and Barry struggle we don't need to bring in any other starters expect for an Anel replacement. We won't know if the other three need replacing until the season starts. Even then it'll take more than one game to judge them.

Derby's circumstances will have been totally different to ours.

I don't think we're that far off. Like it or lump it RND and Robinson are probably going to be back up for Bindon and whomever we bring in to replace Anel (who probably won't come in before Saturday). We still need another right back and probably one more striker. Other than that the squad is looking good overall as it stands.
