Heckingbottom v wilders football

There were times under Wilder where we outplayed decent Premier League teams, so Heckingbottom has a way to go to match that, but I like how he's not scared of youth, or bringing in flair players while still understanding that we have a squad made to play 3 at the back with wingbacks.
 
it’s different, but it’s probably more pleasing on the eye simply because we have flair players now. Something Wilder hated.

Gibbs White, Bogle and N’Diaye are all more skilful than anyone we had in Wilder’s successful years, apart from at a push Duffy who can go in the same bracket. Who he fell out with.
 
Not a lot of difference to be fair, I just don't know why Wilder went ultra defensive in the 2nd Premier league season, at least Hecky has us attacking teams again rather than parking the bus every week. Wilder more up and at em to start with, Hecky more of a thinker when it comes to strategy.
 
Too soon to say? The first matches under Heckingbottom have been better than Wilder’s first matches, but he has inherited better players than Wilder did, though in both cases the confidence of the players was at rock bottom. A very promising start, but a long way to go before any meaningful comparison can be made. And tough for Heckingbottom to achieve as much - if he takes us up as many places in the footballing hierarchy, we will have won the Champions League! So he probably has to have us established in the PL for a couple of seasons to be up there with what Wilder achieved. A trophy would clinch any argument beyond doubt…
 
Some of our play under wilder was brilliant but I must admit after duffy I missed having flair or a MGW sort of player who will shoot outside the box, take a man on etc and I HATED the overplaying to get crosses in, we're defo more direct as in getting crosses in quicker and passing forward more and in some games when we keep the pressure on I find it more exciting than wilderball was
 
It's pretty much the same style and system now as the pre-Premier League Wilder seasons, so I'd say there's no difference. Heckingbottom is actually using Wilder's system anyway by his own admission, so it's still Wilderball really.

This is much better to watch than last season though and even a lot of the year before, at a lower level, obviously. It shows how wrong Wilder was to ditch Duffy and never play a creative player ever again for United. That was one of his main downfalls for me, possibly even more so than his £130m spunkfest.
 
We played some brilliant stuff under Wilder - taking that final season out of it.

It used to be a little frustrating playing 15 passes round in a triangle at the edge of the area instead of just crossing the fucker but some of it was truly awesome at times.

We’ve played some good stuff under Hecky too but I don’t think we’ve quite matched peak Wilder yet. There are certain stuff I think Hecky does better though as I think he’s a little keener for us to have a pop instead of trying for the perfect goal / overloads out wide every time. We play through the middle a bit better now.

To somer extent the answer depends on whether you include the football played when Hecky was in charge when we were in the Premiership after Wilder left. That season the football was crap under both Hecky and Wilder. Clearly the football is better now But I don't think it is better than when we played well in the first season in the Premiership and in the Championship promotion season. Wilder never had Gibbs White and Iyman type players, Hecky will never have Duffy and maybe not JOC. I think those four are the crucial difference if you ever want to compare the best football played by both managers

No he’s very skilful, majestic at twisting and turning but don’t think he’s got as much ‘flair’ as the ones I’ve listed
 
Don't want to sound bitter, but I couldn't give a shit how the two compare in football style's, all I know is hecky as on fire and playing some lovely football which is the most important thing. Back door exit can stay in smoggy land with a pack of 6 peroni. UTB FTP
 
Preferred Dave Bassett's footie than any of those 2. I'm not a football purist so don't like all the fannying about. Our "up and at em" style was brilliant entertainment and exciting from the first to last minute. Great memories of the Bassett era.
 
I think it's a bit too soon to judge Hecky. one way or the other yet, yes it's going in the right direction, but it's still early doors .
But my god if he can keep them improving and pull off that promotion an all, it's gunner feel like the second coming......... 😍

Agree....its a daft question.
Wilder played some the best football I've sen us play in 40 years.
First half at home to Man Utd we gave them a footballing lesson.
Away at Spurs when we were robbed we were by far the better team playing controlled passing football.

Mark my words...if Hecky loses 2 or 3...then he's a crap manager playing the worse football we've seen since Adkins.
We should judge him over a season....not 4 consecutive wins.

Regards Wilder football it was very formulaic....a bit like giving a young kid some painting by numbers then admiring his art work.
We were truly a team, so well drilled, everyone seemed to know where every other player would be without even looking but ironically it seems to thwart individuality. Team work can take you far...but at the top level you need quality individuals who can score from nothing.

I've been watching us regularly since 1977 and Duffy is in my top 5 favourite players.
It's a total mystery how a generally a lower league journeyman...little known by the masses could be so fantastic for us.
