Of course, it is a somewhat bizarre story. Unfortunately the main protagonist passed away a few years ago. I've run this story past the Carrier Bag Firm Truth & Reconciliation Committee. Here goes. This particular pre season tour was in Germany. Essentially, Bassett's team were hosted for training & conditioning by the British Army On The Rhine. Lovely German Football & Sports Clubs hosted the three friendly games. After each one, the team & management, their Army hosts & us naturally congregated in the Clubhouse. At the first game, Bassett was making players take off their SUFC tracksuits in the bar & he was presenting them to various Army personnel. Ditto second game. One of the supporters had his young son with him. And he got more & more pissed off that souvenirs were getting handed out to all & sundry, but not to his "loyal supporter" son. Promises were made that he'd be given some stuff at the end of the final game. I'll say, me, personally, not my thing, bit of polyester with a club crest on it, not interested.
Anyway the third game at TSV Friesen ended. I was Royally Pissed. I wasn't the only one. We hung around with this guy & his son. Waiting for the promised polyester. Bassett & the team walked to the bus. Nothing was offered. The guy lost it. Harsh words were exchanged by both sides - fans & players. Some of the players came at my mate (not the guy with his son). I giggled hopelessly. He stood his ground. Explained that we were no good at football, but the Terraces were our comfort zone, and they ought to think about what they were going to do next. They did, and got on their coach. Different times.... Odd story.....
