Has Porter done enough to be kept on?

Well when Wilson used to put him on from the bench we usually instantly conceded so kudos to Chris for turning it around!

Nonetheless, Porter's goals have come towards the end of the season, where better players, showing better form, have been creating better chances under a better manager (a manager who would still prefer to play a stout, largely immobile midfielder in the striker position rather than Porter himself). Not to take anything away from him, but this is the reason he has been scoring.

There is no reason we can't find a couple of strikers during the close season that will do the same except better.

This has probably been Porter's best season of the 3 he's played for us, which isn't saying much. 7 league goals, of which 2 were penalties (or was it 3?) is a poor return from 30 odd appearances. His cup form has been a pleasant surprise, though.

I've never been a fan of his. His goalscoring record is mediocre to poor and his injury history is not good either. He often looks like a fish out of water when starting in a 4-5-1 formation. If we are starting him regularly next year, we will not go up, as the team will not score enough goals.

Provided there are at least 2 - and preferably 3 - forwards ahead of him in the pecking order, I would be fairly relaxed about re-signing him as cover, but if it's a choice between him and a better striker, I would not offer him a new deal. I might keep him over Miller though.

And BTL, Porter's average over the last 7 years is 6.8 goals per year. Much worse than Billy Sharp.
you cant count 2 seasons he was out so go back to 2005 to be fair and on goals per games hes ahead

I am torn a bit as Porter seems commited , like all forwards you only score when you play and to be fair he mainly used as sub , so to say he scored only 5 in 22 how many of those 22 are 90 minutes and not starting reguarly doesnt help with form , hes not the best , but by no way is he the worst weve had up front and his ratio is still better than billy sharp and some want him desperately for some reason, including the cup hes scored 11 this season you failed to add sharps average over the last 7 years is 10.3

so harsh figures cant say everything

goals come with confidence , at the start of the season the team had no confidence so porter wasnt scoring , he is now

I don't want Sharp anywhere near Bramall Lane next season. We can and should move on and do better.

In answer to your question, Porter's 22 starts break down as follows: (numbers in square brackets show the time of the goals)

0-45 mins - 2 apps (1 goal) - 1 league (0 goals), 1 FA Cup (1 goal [31])
46-60 mins - 0 apps
61-75 mins - 5 apps (0 goals) - 3 league, 1 FA Cup, 1 League Cup
76-90 mins - 8 apps (1 goal) - 5 league (1 goal [45P]), 3 FA Cup (1 goal [81P])
Full appearance - 7 apps (2 goals) - 7 league (2 goals [17, 19])

Those four goals scored in appearances of over 75 minutes were scored in the 17th, 19th, 45th, and 81st minutes, meaning that we gain little advantage from keeping him on the pitch past half time, particularly when you consider that the two latest goals (45 & 81 mins) were penalties.

But isn't that half the point, with no one providing the chances you can't score the goals. Now people are creating chances we are scoring goals. If he starts next season we won't have done a very good job in recruiting but I would give him a squad place, unless we can sign 4 better strikers that is.

Ok, I suppose Clough's opinion is all that matters at the end of the day. I can't see him opting to retain a player he doesn't trust to start games though. It would be a bit odd, especially if he wants to keep a smaller squad and encourage younger players to come through.

happy birthday swfc exactly 5000 days since they last played a prem game
having re checked the dates its exactly 5100 days today since wednesdays last prem game, sorry about that slight date error on the day counter due to americans putting date in reverse , weird lot them yanks 9-11 its the 11th of the ninth

I would keep him around. Useful against certain opposition and puts in a shift.

Worth keeping if we have the budget for it.

Will come of the bench today, score a couple and pen a new deal!fitting end to what's turned out to be an ok season
Looking forward to next season and a serious title challenge with gates averaging 25k!
NC been the best signing I can remember closely followed by Scougs

I ❤️ Scoogs. Have I mentioned that?

Yes from me. Porter seems a decent lad, right attitude, doesn't moan or whine when he's out of the team and always works his nuts off. We know, Clough knows and he probably knows he won't be the main man next year, A new striker or two is everyone's shopping list but as a back up option I don't see we'd get anyone better who'd be happy to play that role who'd be better than him. With injuries, suspensions, resting of players, he's still likely to play a big role in a team gunning for promotion.
