Our best performance of the Bassett era for me, even more than wins v Man Utd/Liverpool/Spurs.

Even through R&W tinted specs, Wednesday had a very good team at the time and would finish 3rd that season, but we absolutely bossed that match. Even after their lucky goal, when convention dictates the home side get a massive lift and the away side have a wobble, we just calmly rode out the storm, boxed our way off the ropes and KOd them at the kop end with a pearler. Never have I felt so relaxed at a derby, and never have I felt an atmosphere quite like it in the away end.

The BL match we won 2-0 but it was an even match so you had the Wednesday fans saying that result didn’t count because we were lucky.

So on to the Hillsboro match the Wednesday fans said we couldn’t get lucky twice and they would slaughter us because this time they wouldn’t take us so lightly. In those days the Wednesday fans were unbelievable arrogant, much more than now.

Was so proud that night because on the night we thoroughly deserved the win. It was the classic away performance, we defended so well preventing SW from any real chances where as we always looked dangerous on the break. Their goalie Chris Woods looked nervous every time the ball went near him.

Even after the match the Wednesday fans were quiet, almost in shock because they couldn’t find any excuses. Really special when you win and in your heart of hearts know you were easily the better team.

Still my favourite derby, even over last season's 4-2. Wednesday was so sure they would get revenge for the 2 - 0 match at the Lane earlier in the season and we were second bottom and Wednesday 3rd when we beat them 3 - 1 at their place. That for me makes it even more impressive than the 4 - 2, as we were ahead of Wednesday when we played them last year. Wednesday also had several internationals back in 92 and we had a team full of free transfers and low money buys and stuffed them! If you watch the video back you'll notice that Tracey kicks or throws it directly to the right back for both of our first-half goals and Gage and Bradshaw are in acres of space, presumably because Wednesday was expecting the big boot from Tracey. Bassett gets huge credit there for me, assuming its come from Harry as an instruction. Is Pinchy watching?!

It was simply the best because it was in the top division. They were going for the title and had a team full of internationals. Piggy Palmer said wait till we get you back to our ground when we beat them in the November fixture. Palmer then ends up in Paul Rogers pocket for the whole of the game at the Sty wondering who the hell is this ginger haired kid. All four stands full of Blades, great away shirt. They never expected us to win and it still hurts them after all these years that we did the double over them and stopped them getting at least the runners up spot. Tactically DB got it spot on that night. Unfortunately that wasn't the case in the Wembley semi final the year after.

I forgot to mention that as you say it was in the top flight too. Sutton had come straight from non-league Sutton of course into the top flight! Can you imagine that today! Not so sure we could have done any more at Wembley. The large open pitch suited them I think at Wembley. They were used to it, we weren't and I think that helped.

Wet through in the triangle bit of their kop witnessing Chris Woods panicking every time a ball came within 10 feet of him......what a night ❤️⚔️⚽

That’s my favourite derby game ever as we totally bossed the game all night!!. I was sat/stood in the lower tier and got absolutely pissed wet through as the weather was abysmal!!. Also remember a load of balloons were released before the game.
27 Years ago!!!. God I feel old?. Lol
A fabulous memory though. UTB

It was a fabulous night! My favourite derby ever . Sitting in the cantilever stand amongst the pigs with their little disbelieving porcine faces was a night I will treasure always. It was a lousy night weather wise , & we walked up Herries Road after the game , cold , soaked , & blissfully happy!

That makes me feel old remember it clear as day and I was only 11 was absolutely sodden but the memories still strong

At a little over 17 1/2 years of age it was quite simply the best night of my life.

For fear of offending loved ones and direct descendents I won’t say where exactly it ranks now. But it’s right up there!

Walking down Herries Road on the way to the ground I could feel it. Round the back of their main stand all we could hear were Blades either singing or telling each other that win, lose or draw we’d show who the city’s best fans were. And boy did we do our bit.

I had repetitive strain injury from whacking my wooden seat up and down all through the game. Balloons, songs and general mayhem in the upper tier. My mate even had his Blades baseball cap brolly! Bob Booker making an appearance.

And then we were just immense from pretty much the first kick of the match.

Back to The Sidings in Dronfield for a lock-in before a great day at school the following day.

Fucking Excellent.

I was delighted when we signed Bobby , having been a big admirer of his goal scoring instincts a long time before he came to us but I never anticipated the immediate impact he would have that night. ( Was it really 27 years ago -I remember it like yesterday!! )

Me and a dozen mates from my local were in the lower tier bang in the middle of the goal so had a perfect view of the first 2 goals . Another abiding memory is that of two of us who had been kept behind for an age in a previous derby sneaking out before the end , rushing up Middlewood Rd. finding an offy and and buying a couple of the strongest lagers they had then swigging them back in the shop doorway whilst jumping up and down singing "We are Bladesmen " like a couple of demented teenagers .

Happy Days .

Inability to spell our players’ names correctly is apparently not a new phenomenon, or at least can be applied retrospectively :)

Davison

Centurion: "Davidson''?
Brian: "Yes, what's wrong with that?"
[Centurion draws his sword]
Brian: "Ahh! No, it's not Davidson is it. Not that awful Davidson chap, it's erm Davisson yes?"
Centurion: "Yes, except that it's Davison. Sir Bobby Davison. Legend. A bounce killer, not that they bounced back then".
Brian: "Davison?"
Centurion: "Yes, Davison"
Brian: "Ahh, Davison ok, got it. Spelling is important right?"
Centurion: "Yes sir. Try emailing him with a 'd' in the name and see how far you get"
