Hanson, Option for Friday?

Watching Bristol City tonight they are giving Boro no time on the ball in midfield or at the back, harrying them Off the ball.

We like to play our way out and through and doing that may play right into Bristol’s hands.

So maybe do something they are not expecting, pick James Hanson, we may have to bypass their pressing players anyway so a bit of a target up top may be a good thing, and I thought he did well when he came on against Fulham.

I take your point, but I think Donaldson is a more likely shout. If he's fully fit and on form he can be a handful for defences and has the pace/muscularity to cause problems.

We do move the ball too slowly I totally agree with that. We need to attack quicker and we need pace in attack to do that.

You do know that Donaldson was injured for a while and hasn’t played much since don’t you? He’s unlikely to ‘look up to much’ whilst sitting in the bench.

I saw him play at Forest and QPR and he barely touched the ball in both games. Not sure he is the answer short or long term. Clarke, Sharp and Brooks will continue to rotate the striking options until we sign a pacy striker in January I believe. Anything from Donaldson, Hanson, Evans or Lavery is a bonus. Bold prediction: I do not expect any of those 4 to be at the club this time next season.

It would be very harsh to judge Donaldson before he’s actually had a chance. He might not be any good but my point was that it’s not possible to tell how good he is from the amount of game time he’s had.

It's hard though as I say did well v sunderland and then got injured but at Forest he was really poor and then the same at QPR. Given chances and simply not taken them. He has not deserved a run of games from those two performances. Even if his touch was off or he missed chances I could maybe excuse that as lack of match practice but he has barely kicked the ball in those two games and looked a bit half arsed to be honest. If he was picked you think he would bust a gut to stay there but that did not happen.

Really?! Hanson doesn't win his fair share of headers?
Criticise his lack of goals, his lack of pace, his creativity, close control; take your pick. But he is excellent in the air, strong and commanding. You may not like the guy but to make out he doesn't win more than his share of headers is frankly ridiculous.

He's not match fit. Look, Hanson would have been a much better option than Donaldson to throw on towards the end today. However, if Clarke got injured, Donaldson is the only one who can replace him. It's a difficult choice for the manager to make but you can only have so many on the bench. Hanson was on his way back to L1. He's not good enough to start. Donaldson has been poor but he was rushed back after an injury and only played a bit part since. He has, however, shown he can do it at this level.
