I think I know what's happening on here today...

Now I know he hasn't cost a club record fee, nor scored a wondergoal at the Sty, nor does he wear his hair in fetchingly manicured dreadlocks. But it'd be nice if James Hanson chipped in & scored a goal or two here & there. You know, like strikers are meant to do...
Don't just judge him on goals it's a team game after all. I live near Bradford and their fans point out how many goals they let in from set pieces since he left. If you were there last night I'm sure you noted his contributions in our box. If he is part of a successful team that scores lots of goals and he doesn't just stand around with his thumb up his arse but contributes to the overall team results then he's still valuable. Now if we weren't scoring from all over our team then maybe fair comment but that isn't the case so if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Do we need more options next year? Of course but I'm sure Wilder will be working hard to get that. Here and now Hanson is a valuable cog in a good machine.

Before we had Hanson, every kick out from Simon was met virtually unchallenged and came straight back 20 yards into our half.

Now, every kick is towards him and whether he wins it or not his physical challenge is enough for the ball to be dropping near to where the header is made and for the second ball challenge to be well into their half rather than ours. This is a huge improvement.

We do seem to have stopped playing it out from the back since he came, though, and a bit of variation might be good.

Also, Billy is not the ideal partner for Hanson because Billy seems to keep himself a fair distance from him and he is quite slow to pick up any flick-ons. Last night I didn't see him get onto a single one, and yet Jayo picked up 2 quite soon after coming on, as he was much quicker to that second ball. Caolan is similarly quick.

In both boxes his winning of the ball is invaluable, though his heading towards goal is less impressive than his ability to knock it down for others, hence assists rather than goals.

Overall, as is emphasised in books like Moneyball, a successful team combines players with different abilities and these abilities are not always what people generally expect for the position that they are playing.

Played really well yesterday, did pretty much all the donkey work (no pun intended) and ran himself into the ground - also did well in the air against two giants albeit mainly on his own with his strike partner certainly having very rare off day. Their centre halves didn't really want to know when ol' Handsome was unsettling them.

Have you literally just null & voided your own thread?

It doesn't really work like that, does it?

"Controversial" in that it's a criticism of one member of a unit to be proud of. But uncontroversial (surely?) in terms of him needing, as a striker, to score more goals.

He's undoubtedly brought good things to the table (not least, as mentioned above, his usefulness in defending set-pieces, etc), & his technique's far better than I'd imagined. No-one's suggesting he ought to be shot at dawn.

Just that there are difficulties with him, the lack of goals, & the thing highlighted by the tendency to just lump it up to him during the last 20-25 minutes last night rather than trying to manage the game & retain possession. And even when it got hoiked up to him, he wasn't keeping hold of the ball, just putting himself about. We seemed to make it more difficult for ourselves than was needed. But maybe nerves played a big part.

Gillingham rant?

After working his bollocks off at Oldham
He grew a pair and worked them off again last night
Effective teams are better than the sum of the individual parts provided they are put together and work together in the right way

Gillingham rant?

I wasn't sure of the point you were making. Whether you were agreeing with my point by referring back to what Wilder said after Gillingham? Or you meant something Wilder said more recently?

Doing a job for the team in a much more effective way than Clarke was IMO. Unbeaten with him in team since his arrival, Shipperleyesque contribution but with assists. Very good team player at this level and not spearheading attack as he would probably want to be, or in a way which would probably suit his own game more.

Speaking of Shipperley-esque; I said to my dad, the first time I saw Hanson live, that Hanson reminded me very much of Shipperley in the way he moved and played, etc.

Hanson works hard which is his first job. Unfortunately nobody seems to be able to pick him out with a decent cross. It's not like he's missing sitter after sitter.

Can we just leave things till the summer and enjoy this thing[/QUOTE]

That. ^^^^^^. Times ten. One win away from what we've waited six years for and people are still whittling, fretting and moaning.

He's contributing in the same way that Matt Done's contributed to a stellar season - i.e. significantly, but without scoring.

No problem, we're doing great. And we're comfortably top scorers in the division.

Hanson's played a part, just like Akinbiyi did back then. But I'd imagine he'll last here about as long. Unless he remembers how to score goals.

Wrong again.

You forget that the objective is to win matches not for an individual striker to score goals.
If Wilder thinks Hanson is a big factor in helping us win matches
Then he'll play almost every match even if he rarely scores any goals.

Although I admit that if we start losing a few then the spotlight will fall on Hanson if he's struggling to score.

can anyone name a striker who was prolific alongside sharp (whilst he was also banging them in) ?
I was thinking about this the other day and I can't think of one (probably is one)

Hanson has also enabled Billy to get more goals - others like O'Connell from corners - because he is dangerous and gets about two markers on him (freeing up others for a shot/header on goal).

Not a bad signing at all. We are virturally in the Championship and he has helped us kick on from January.

Knock yourself out mate.
Me,I don't get excited with 3 partners for Sharp none of whom score goals. The clue is in the job title. Striker.
I think his job description is 'target man', not striker. Does that change what we expect of him? Last night he did not play well, but I think he has so far made a positive contribution.

Andy Keogh?
I thought that but made the same mistake bushblade did. One striker , one season kind of points towards it not being easy to bang them in alongside sharp. When he's the main man it seems the goal of his partner is to feed him and when he's not the main man he seems to end up on the wing.

Tbf, Keogh got 12 the next season too. Definitely second fiddle to Sharp, but he played his part.

James Hayter was scoring about 1 in 3 for Donny when Sharp was there too.

Anyone who has played defence will know that Hanson is the type of player who is your worst nightmare. Opponent's no they're in a battle with him, unlike certain other so called target men we've had in past season's.
And in a parallel universe, forwards with pace, trickery, skill, guile and an eye for a goal are much the preferred option. Go figure !

But not down t'Lane ;)

UTB

PS your wrong. Even in Concord Park league 7, your wrong. I was a defender / holding middy. I disagree wholeheartedly with your ascertain about worst nightmare. As a last resort, you can kick and wrestle with a Hanson type. You gain a few fouls, you give a few away.

It's very difficult kicking and wrestling with a player that's whizzing past you at 100 mph !!!!

2005/6 - Sharp 23 / Keogh 15.
Slightly misleading stat though. Billy 24 from 45 total and Keogh 15 from 52 total. That's not what I'd call prolific, it's about one goal every three and a half games compared with Billy's one in less than two.
