Hammond At The Final Whistle

Apart from the rashness of the challenge which led to the penalty, Hammond had a great game. This is a world of difference compared to his performance against Peterborough where I thought he looked very lethargic and off the pace.

Rule 1 in the box, stay on your feet.

I played a bit of semi-pro football in and around Sheffield and I must say that throughout my 'career' I stayed on my feet every single time in the box and rarely made a single mistake...tbh, I can't for the life of me work out why I didn't play at higher level with that being the case...

There's been a tendency in the last couple of games for wingers to waltz through our right flank - look at Peterborough's winner for example.

I think it's a slight weakness in the side that we have Coutts and Brayford on the same wing - Coutts always looks shattered towards the end and Brayford, after a long lay-off, also falls away a bit.

I think the plan was to bring Coutts off as the board went up for Done to come on for him. Then there was confusion as Sammon sat down and wanted to come off, so Done ended up coming on for him.

It might have been made us attack them down the right more in the last few minutes had Done come on for Coutts.

If Brayford stays on his feet when blocking that shot earlier, we're 1-0 down. What rubbish. Rule 1 is stay on your feet unless you know you will get the ball. As it went, he got skinned by a fresh-legged £19m player. There's no shame in it, truly there isn't.

What troubles me the most is that we have been moaning for weeks that the players don't care.

Now when a player runs 50 yards to bail out 2 team mates and accidentally catches the guy, then looks like his entire world has ended we're still not happy.

He was devastated and he is ON LOAN. If they had all shown this kind of desire this season, I doubt we'd be where we are in the league.

As an aside, I love Baxter, but I hope someone said to him "should be you out there son but it's not is it? And it's not because you're not good enough."

Rubbers were put on the mend of pencils
Why?
Cos we all make mistakes

We move on though

Be nice if we did. Nowt like raking over the coals of a player when he isn't the crowd fave though is there?

Bloke put one foot wrong in 90 minutes. At our level I'm forgiving him that.

If Beard had been stronger we wouldn't be having this chat but I'm not seeing him getting a deal of shit.

JB looked knackered, and you can hardly blame him. As has already been said, how anyone can criticise him, after the performance he put in, for getting skinned by a £25,000,000 player (or whatever he cost) who had only been on the pitch a few minutes, is ridiculous.

Likewise Hammond.

Said it on other threads, he was and has been our outstanding player for a few games.

I wouldn't have believed I would write those words when he first joined us, now I would be gutted if he's not here until at least the end of the season (ditto Coutts). He will get an extra clap from the B56 family next home game.

Honest mistake from Hammond, he should have stayed on his feet as he had someone else (Coutts???) covering, but only the Saturday before we've all hammered the defence for not getting a tackle in when the Peterborough player has waltzed through for their winner.

If Coutts had done his job is perhaps more pertinent.

I think there is no harm in discussing the issue

Not seen the replay but at the time, I thought Brayford was at least as much to blame as Hammond.
If brayford had cleared for a throw-in, Hammond wouldn't have had to put himself in that position.

Not looking to blame players but Brayford got in front of Depay and chose to cut inside towards the box.

Think we need to slowly and quietly end the post mortems here and move on?

The team did us proud on Saturday and I am satisfied they kept what should have been on paper and thorough Arsenalesque penising to a nowt nowt stalemate. Hammond made the judgement in good intent. He clipped their player and it was a penalty, just as much as Sharp's was against Peterborough.

Focus all that good effort now into preventing further malaise in Div 1 and hopefully a reaspectable finish, a genuine but regrettable effort in the playoffs and avoid selling further talent in the JTW. The team needs strengthening, and it needs it fast. We can't spend another season in Div 1 and watch the pigs draw away from us even further.

pommpey

Hammond wears his heart on his sleeve, he's a truly full-hearted player. Things actually seem visibly to matter to him.

I like him.
Me too.
After a shaky start he's now on of the first few names on the teamsheet for me along with Coutts, Sharp and Edgar. Oh, and Long. And Brayford. Basham too... :)

I was very proud of the effort from the lads. To a man, we put a shift in and almost completely nullified opposition that are 47 places higher than us in the league. Unfortunately, Brayford got done for pace/power/balance after 90 minutes of toil by a fresh, pacey, multi-million pound international winger. In a desperate bid to avoid a repeat of Peterborough’ 3rd goal, Hammond dived in to try to stop him. It was an error in judgement on his part as he got man and not ball and the rest is history. Hammond looked disconsolate after and probably had that feeling of “I’ve let everyone down”. That’s natural when you make a mistake that undoes all that hard work. But it was a genuine mistake from a fully committed player. I can live with that. What matters now is that we repeat that level of intensity on a regular basis in the league. I hope it hasn’t taken too much out of them because Wigan tomorrow is a more important game and we will need to be at our best.

It was a tough call on which side to select for Adkins given the importance of the Wigan game, the option of bringing in any of Adams, Done, JCR, Baxter etc. But I think it was right that he rewarded those players who have stepped up in recent weeks. Let’s hope that serves as a kick up the backside to the likes of Adams and Baxter to make the most of their undoubted ability.
