Over a long season, in a team that struggles to score goals against top half teams (24 goals in 24 matches last season against the top 12, 20 in 18 matches against the rest of the top 10 the season before), with it's only attacker with pace who created 1v1 gone and with no real options elsewhere, I think he's irreplaceable.

There's no goals coming from CM (10 in the last 90 Championship matches under Wilder, 3 of which were penalties) so there's even more pressure on the front 4
Last season we scored more goals than the season we got 90 points. I am increasingly of the point of view that keeping it tight is how championship success is achieved look at Burnley's last promotion for freakishly clean sheets! Of course goals matters but what players bring defensively is just as important. It's a bit like how Ronaldo and Messi can still score but the rest of their game isn't elite anymore.

It's also easier to spend a compromised Championship Budget on the defensive third than it is to make an impact when buying quality in the attacking third. A proven goal scorer cost X3 the price of a good quality championship defender.

Defensive performance is a lot more dependant on the opposition and luck than attacking. If you can consistently be a threat to score 2+, you'll win a lot of matches. If it's 0 or 1 more often, you are always at the whim of a defensive mistake, a fluke deflection or a great goal and your margin is tiny.

Average goals scored for automatic promotion teams in the last 10 seasons is 82, lowest is 63 but only 3/20 teams scored <70

I'd love it but I'm not prepared for the Cov fans meltdown.

Is it too much to ask just to see the big lad play in the middle like he did that first season for us? we were a crap team but he was a massive highlight in it.
If Wilder wanted to find a role for Hamer that didn't involve defensive responsibility, he would have done by now.

Would be the ultimate 👀 if Gus extends.
It would but I really can't see it myself.
Can see him staying and seeing the season out.

But reckon it's far more likely we cash in before the window shuts, as is our usual way.

Vicinius Jr in last year of his deal. Yet RM still wanted 147m for him.

If you’ve got Coventry, with fresh PL money and paying 22m for a keeper and West Ham, who just raised 140m from the sale of 2 players, we should be playing hardball.

He’s worth a lot to us. So let them prize him away, none of this fair market value bollocks. As I said before 5m is peanuts. It’s neither here nor there.

He’s worth a lot more than that to us because of what he brings.

We have to change our thinking. It would be refreshing to just say he’s not for sale and we are intent on him signing a new deal.

What is the point these new owners coming in and not spending anything?

I appreciate the principle but parallels can't really be drawn with Vini Jr. based on his commercial appeal. The transfer fee looks after itself.

Perhaps he'll sign a new deal, but if we are selling to Coventry the leverage in negotiations wouldn't really be with us.
In that scenario, you would assume he'd expressed a desire to rejoin his old club and we'd be risking losing him on a free.

We paid £15m for him, he's going into his 4th and final year. Presumably then, anything over £3.75m would represent profit in the accounts.
I'm not suggesting £4m would be a good deal and I'd rather he stayed too but there's a business decision if money is on the table.

If we are talking to him about a new deal then I'd say that probably narrows it down to the two possibilities. He signs it, or he's sold. I don't think we'd be willing to lose him on a free

Anyone who goes up not scoring loads of goals is an outlier. It's very unusual.

And we certainly don't have the defence to do it.

And our points to goals ratio in 2024-25 was very much an outlier. See also 2019-20.

I hope it’s true he’s probably the championships most creative player despite his shortcomings.

Also wouldn’t surprise me if it’s not the old ‘oh sorry we tried, we offered him a contract but we can’t compete with the PL’ BS

Seriously, not sure what nonsense Jammy Rhubarb has been telling people.

The only thing I don't like about this sort of stuff is if/when it doesn't happen, people get incredibly angry with the club simply because they've fallen for a load of bullshit.

I know you can't stop rumours and I know kids get very excited by them but it undoubtedly harms the club when peoples hopes are dashed because something isn't true

From a purely football pov we'd try and keep him , in reality though if Cov are intrested and so is he, then get the best deal we can .

From a football pov we'd have kept Vini and Anel but we accepted the financial reality then and may have to now.

We should also remember that many were crying out last season for a dynamic , athletic pacey midfield which for all his talent Gus will never be .

Personally I think if Cov want him , almost like or neighbours bringing bazza back , its more sentimental than anything . He'll struggle in the Prem and have a few brilliant moments ,not enough to keep them up.

If the player wants to then thats generally the outcome.

How can not being able to compete, with Premier League club's wealth, be bullshit? Its just a fact.

Rob staton put a vid up of the lads training in Bochum and I couldn’t see Gus amongst them

The stats when he's played suggest otherwise.

I'd argue that first season down Gus was very effective and carried us a bit.

If you are talking about team cohesion with him in the side may have a point.
What gets forgotten is that at Coventry he was their best midfielder by a yard.

But for us we wanted to accomodate Souza, Blaster etc. So to get all three in Hamer could play odd the left be more attacking etc.
Yes you’re right, he definitely did, he is good player after all. But I never felt we got Coventry Gus under Wilder. With Gus we lacked from other players, without Gus we are going to struggle unless we get players in.

Sorry to derail the thread again - No Campbell is less surprising as he's training alone, no Bamford?
Bamford's missus is due to give birth any day now, so he's been allowed to stay home. And Campbell is there as another has pointed out, behind Cooper.

It's RND behind Peck.

Ivo Grbic also not there, hopefully because he's poised to leave.
