SHEFFIELD United will face competition from Queens Park Rangers if they decide to pursue their interest in Peter Halmosi.

United, who are also believed to be monitoring the Hungarian's compatriot and Plymouth Argyle team mate Krisztian Timar, have been linked with a move for the international as they prepare to reshape their squad before the new Championship season.

But QPR, arguably the most cash rich club in the division, are known to be considering an offer for Halmosi.

Despite tracking Derby striker Robert Earnshaw, who is understood to be on the brink of completing a switch to Nottingham Forest, identifying new midfielders and defenders will be United manager Kevin Blackwell's top priority over the coming months.

He has privately expressed concerns that the squad he inherited from Bryan Robson in February is overloaded with attacking talent while other departments are dangerously short of personnel.

With a deal to purchase Ferencvaros due to be completed shortly, recruiting Timar, a rugged centre-half, and the creative Halmosi would have obvious benefits as the Blades look to exploit an ever-expanding porfolio of overseas partners which also includes Chengdu Blades, Central Coast Mariners, White Star Woluwe, Connection FC and Sao Paulo.

Timar is recovering from surgery on a fractured cheekbone and is likely to miss pre-season training: "I might be OK for the first game of next season," he said.

WHERE ARE WHITE STAR WOLUWE FROM .....?? WOULD IT BE THE U.S. of A . BY ANY CHANCE...???

Plymouth Argyle have stepped up their attempts to secure Hungarian pair Peter Halmosi and Krisztian Timar on new long-term contracts.

Argyle chairman Paul Stapleton has revealed he had talks with the agent for both players in the city last Sunday.

The future of Halmosi and Timar was not the only topic of discussion, however.

Stapleton told Herald Sport: "We had a long meeting but it was not just about them, but other players the agent has got as well."

Halmosi and Timar are both represented by Sam Stapleton, who has several clients from eastern European countries on his books.

"Talks are continuing with the agent about Peter and Krisztian," added the Argyle chairman.

Halmosi and Timar both completed permanent transfers to the Pilgrims last May after loan spells at the Championship club.

Timar ended up as Argyle's player of the year for the 2007/08 season, closely followed in the voting by Halmosi.

They were hugely influential in the Pilgrims improving their final league position for the seventh successive season.

Halmosi still has two more years remaining on his contract, but Timar's deal ends in June 2009.

So, in theory at least, the defender could talk terms with other clubs from January onwards.

Halmosi and Timar have been linked with Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield United recently.

But Argyle manager Paul Sturrock has made it clear he wants to keep the two Hungarian internationals at Home Park for the long term.

Timar suffered a serious head injury in the season-ending 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The centre-back had an operation on multiple fractures to his skull after an aerial collision with Wolves' left-back George Elokobi.

The surgery was a success and there is a chance that Timar could be fit for the start of the new season in August.

Timar has returned to Hungary for his summer break but, before leaving Plymouth, he met up with the Argyle chairman.

Stapleton said: "Krisztian was positive and upbeat, and he was very pleased with all the messages of goodwill he had from the fans.

"He realises he's a favourite with them and he likes it here.
