John Halls' hopes of a return to Bramall Lane have been dashed as Kevin Blackwell has ruled out a move for the Reading defender, who is out of contract this summer.

The 26 year old Londoner had a loan spell with United toward the end of last season, and although he performed well, Blackwell has gone on record:

"I have made the decision because I don't think we will be short of cover in that area. We have Derek Geary, Kyle Naughton, and one or two other Academy products in the pipeline.

"If you have an Academy you would hope to get one or two through to the first team, and Kyle did so well in his loan spell over the border last term, I would really like to take a look at him."

Local born Naughton was a regular at Reserve level before joining Gretna and featured in March's Ferencvaros friendly in Hungary.

Naughton is a great player, used to play for school team before moving on to United and he was very good. As for Halls i liked him but i think we can do better.

Halls - glad we haven't signed him, he was ok but didn't bring anything extra to the team. Would be great if we did get somebody up from the Academy. Was surprised that Nicky Laws didn't get a chance last season and wonder if he will this time round.

Greta news IMO. We need to show some of the lads in the academy that they do have a chance of progressing to the first team squad.

Only if they're good enough like.

Naughton is a player who is pretty consistent as far as we've seen... admittedly, we haven't seen the reserves as much this season as we have previously.

The only problem with some of these lads is that they still seem to rely on a great deal of instruction from the bench. Hopefully, playing in and amongst older pros will bring him on a little more.

Also, a lot of them still seem to be quite slight physically... which isn't ideally suited for Championship football.

I'd like to see more of the lads loaned to League One level clubs to rough them up a bit before we start relying on them to just slot into our team.

Oh yeah without a doubt! They have to be good enough to make the step up!
Learning there trade in the lower divisions should be a required element anyway :)
