Jordan Hallam and Callum Semple are currently on trial with Viking (Stavanger) in Norway. Normally a big club up here, Viking were relegated last season and are looking to strengthen.

Hallam started in a recent friendly and apparently impressed.

Did someone mention some surprising news regarding the U23 players the other day? Are they being released, or would this most likely be loan moves?

Not ITK Bergen but Semple is a centre back highly rated by us ,just coming back from a ACL operation.Hallam is a promising young player.
I think they will be going for experience.

Both not ready for our 1st team and it would make sense for them to play in the Norway football league throughout the summer before coming back to us stronger

Just in case I have missed anything, do we have a historical connection to the club?, just wondering why they haven't been sent out to somewhere in the UK.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure they will have a fantastic time playing abroad, just curious.

The idea is to give Callum Semple football through the Summer after missing a year with injury.
Would only be a loan.

He has only played two full 90 minutes in 13 months so this opportunity may have come too soon for him to take it.

No links to the club just that they liked both players and enquired about them.

Viking have a scout called Johan Selvig. He used to be at a small Stavanger club called Sola and he's a friend of John Pemberton. I think that friendship lead to United arranging summer football schools at Sola, which has been running for a few years now, despite Pemberton leaving our academy. I know one Sola youngster got a contract with our academy some years ago, but he never really got going as it was found he had a heart condition.

Anyway, Selvig, now at the main club in Stavanger, has kept in touch with United's academy, and he's been watching a few academy/U23 games this season. He recommended those two players (maybe others too) to Viking and it's lead to the trial. I think Selvig has also spoken to our former academy boss Nicky Cox about the two players.

Anders Joa?
Would be good rehab for Semple. Must have been quite close to getting on the bench for Cup games etc. before his injury.

Yes, Anders Joa. He's been playing in the Norwegian lower leagues.

Any update on the lads on trail in Malaga ?

I think there will be a decision from Viking next week.

Translating a news item this morning:

Viking wants Jordan Hallam

19 year old impressed during trial in Spain.

After the player impressed in both training and in a game vs Stabæk in Marbella, Viking have decided to get Jordan Hallam (19).

- We have started talking to Sheffield United and will try to get this done this week. It will take some time when a club from abroad is involved, said Viking manager Bjarne Berntsen to Aftenbladet.

After the training camp in Spanish Marbella finished Saturday, Jordan Hallam and teammate Callum Semple went back to England. Two days earlier they got their evaluation from Viking's coaching staff at the hotel in Spain.

The conclusion was that Semple is too far away from top form, while Hallam looks to be an attacking player who can go straight into a league team.

Good stats

Hallam did well in training sessions and he played the full game as a right sided central midfielder in the 1-2 defeat to Stabæk. He was very much involved in what Viking created going forward - and he was the player that covered the most ground during the game. The 19 year old ran 12 kilometers during the 90 minutes.

- He's a different type of midfielder to what we've got. Hallam is more direct and forward thinking and he's got good vision. In addition he's got a tremendous statistic when it comes to goals and assists.

- You could see that his stats were reflected in what we saw in real life, Berntsen explains and points to the 60 goals Hallam has scored at U18 and U23 level at Sheffield United the past two seasons.

Hallam was clear about his intentions of staying at Viking when Aftenbladet talked to him just before Viking set off to Spain.

- Yes, definitely. It would be fantastic. To get first team experience at Viking would be great. In England I play with the U23 team, so to come here and play for the first team would be exactly what I need, said the 19 year old.

From what Aftenbladet understands a loan deal with Sheffield United is unlikely to cost much to start with. (May be more if he impresses?)

If Hallam comes to Stavanager within the next couple of days, he may be in contention for Friday's pre season game against Åsane.

Thanks for the translation, Bergen.

Seems it’s just a potential loan move then?

I wouldn’t want to see him leave permanently. I think, and this is going mostly on his stats as I haven’t seen him enough to make proper judgement, he has the potential to make the grade.

A loan move abroad could really kick him on and get him pushing for a first team place.

Yes the reports I saw, on the game they played, were very positive about Hallam. Comments on Semple a bit strange as he didn't get any game time to show his skills. Still its a game of opinions.
Be interesting to see how it works out Different game in Norway with most games played on astroturf. Viking have ripped up the grass on their home ground in favour of plastic.I am sure Jordan will do well and for sure he will continue to do what he does best and score goals, we will miss him for the 23s.
Interesting times for all our young players

Maybe Wilder has seen what happened to Brooks when he played over summer and wondered if the same can happen to others? I mean, if you're not playing for months all that happens is that you lose ground. If players aren't playing regularly or for the first team, it's a good way to bring them through. If we were to keep Ched, that might be an option.

Good luck to Jordan I am sure he will keep scoring goals.
I suppose that means he wont appear for the 23s against Villa. Opens the door for others to bang them in.

He’s scored 60 goals from midfield in the last two seasons!?

Is that extraordinary stat correct or has something got lost in translation?

60 be about right although he played up front mostly as I recall. He was also the pen taker, and we got a fair few,and he
seldom missed.
He did not stand out like Brooks but he was always available to get a strike away. You could watch a game and wonder where he was but when a goal came it was usually Jordan who scored.
I wish him well and its interesting that he will be giving up his summer break as the Viking season goes through the summer months.
I hope Bergin Blade keeps us posted on how Hallum gets on

Hallam has returned to us. He struggled to get playing time in Norway, having originally received a lot of praise and started the season as a first choice.

Viking play 4-3-3 and Hallam had to adapt quite a bit as he was competing for one of the midfield spots. United have used him in slightly more attacking positions (I think no 10 is his favoured role).

Pity it didn't work out particularly where our loan system is geared to our youngsters getting competitive game time. Shows how important it is to get them in with the right club. I'm sure he will have enjoyed the experience and it will be nice to see him back to scoring goals although we might find him another club nearer to home
