I briefly forgot midway it's most memorable not best so obviously the likes of Booker and Hockey will be in there but probably also players like Pesch, Tonge, Hodges, Ward, Borbokis and Evans would count as memorable. Probably Hulse would fit too as he contributed well to our only recent top flight season. Then again Nosworthy is also etched on the brain.

I guess the further back you go the less memorable they must be as some of our most accomplished will be beyond living memory. My list is admittedly bollocks as I don't remember most of these in a literal sense because I wasn't around.
My dad didnt rate Coldwell so I would take him and Booker off and bring in Hodges and Cockerill

Only two? Wow. Nice to know, I basically scanned the 100+ appearances list on Wikipedia and added a few extras to be honest! I only know the things I've read about 80's and earlier, not least through the opinions on here, and just kind of collate them in my head to form some kind of impression. I could have thrown anyone in at the end, like Albert Cox who at around 300 appearances I actually know nothing about, because I'd used up those I've read much about earlier in the list. So I was curious to know who I might be unwise to.

I loved Hodges too but missed him off the last bunch for someone else. Cockerill I was too young to see for United but remember him in his twilight years at Southampton and beyond. I suppose for the pre-Bassett 80's I just think of Edwards and Morris with Stancliffe at the back and only really Hatton, Philiskirk, Beagrie as other effective players so I guess I neglected to think of Cockerill.

I worked with Albert Cox's daughter Judith, she retired from work about 12 years ago and she showed me some photos of her dad playing for SUFC. I remember my dad telling me Albert was a hard player but lacked skill. Beagrie and Borbokis could get into my best 100 players but I would need more time to carefully think of the players to leave out.

One of the best players I ever saw was my avatar, Dave Powell.
If Eddie Colquhoun is in the HoF so must be Dave Powell.
Fast, assured, great passer, calm and fearless in the tackle. Such a shame a bad injury finished his career early.

Always remember the tackle he made on Supermac. (Malcolm MacDonald)
For those who aren't of my generation forgive my reminiscing when we played Newcastle at home.
Supermac was scoring for fun, he had fearsome pace would leave a centre half for dead and had a bullet like shot.
His trademark goal was to beat defenders for pace, leave them in his wake and smash it in.
Eddie Colquhoun was having a stormer and had him in his pocket all game until once MM slipped away from him and set off at a thunderous pace with the ball at his fear towards the blades goal ball. Powell charged after him and even at full pelt he somehow manager to swung a leg around and wrapped his foot around the ball, and with an amazing timed tackle sent MacDonald spreawling face down into the mud. Powell got up ball at his feet and calmly passed the ball. A stunning tackle, one that saved a near certain goal.
Dave was awesome playing for Wales, never saw him out of his depth even against Germany, and was calmness personified.
For me a fantastic player and massively under rated.

Powell has played against MacDonald only 3 times and that was against Luton (League Cup in Sept 1969) and in the two League matches in the 1970-71 season. I liked Powell and it annoys me when historians talk about Flynn rather than Powell in that 1970-71 team. Powell was a regular that season until his injury at QPR in March 1971 and Flynn (who is not as talented as Powell) played about 10 games

You could well be right silent, how do you know such things? Or is their a font of all knowledge website?
I can only blame gallons of magnet and old age!
Just looked at MM goalscoring record in 1970-71 and 71-72, 99 games 66 goals. Not quite Jimmy Greaves class but damn good.
Did Supermac wear the white shirt of Luton or the Tangerine and blue shorts?
Hope it was white cos face down after Powell's tackle bound to have got covered in mud. :)

In the 3 Luton games I mentioned, they were wearing white shirts with black shorts against us. He left Luton for Newcastle in summer 1971 (Powell had played his last game for us before moving to Cardiff and playing a few times for us). Here is a video of our 2-1 defeat at Kenilworth Road in December 1970 (the footage didnt include TC's goal from a penalty). MM headed in their 1st goal from a John Ryan (later to play for us) cross. Just before MM's long throw leading to the 2nd goal you can see in the footage below of Dave Powell dispossessing MM with ease but the ball ran away for a throw in after it bobbled. Colin Addison got injured in that game and didnt play for us again before his move to Hereford. I was at that match.

Powell was one of the policemen on match duty at Ninian Park when we won 2-0 there in October 1976 (Gary Hamson's debut, Simon Stainrod scored twice for us)

Just remembered Gary Hamson who is one of the three best teenagers I have seen play for the Blades (the other two are Tonge and Maguire)

we sold Mick Jones on the day before the home game against Newcastle in Sept 1967, the fans protested outside the ground that day and the protests continued in that Newcastle game, the fans were singing "Send Wragg to Vietnam" and LSF recalls fans singing "Dick Wragg Jam Rag". Carlin scored the opening goal on his debut and he then became popular in our 2-1 win (Reece scored our 2nd goal)
From my recollection we had supposedly bought Willie Carlin to provide the ammunition from midfield to supply Woody and Reece and Jones, something we lacked desperately at the time. He was never seen as a replacement and as such was never unpopular. I was on Shoreham that day and as a Blade it still remains the worst day of my football following life and I will never forgive Wragg for giving away the player who to me as a 14 year old was God.

Mick Hill took Jones place a few games later, my dad said Hill wasnt good on the floor. We signed Addison after we sold Birchenall and we tried to sign Stewart Scullion who turned us down although he did join us 3 and half years later

Would Jordan Stewart *shudder* be classed as memorable?

He's the only player we've had (in my memory anyway) that's been so bad he's actually tackled himself - and that includes the atrocities of Nosworthy et al

I think we should ignore the Star's list and just pick our personal top 10 faves - or make it your personal top 11 and send 'em a complete team.

monty :D oh dear the only club in england where someone who would have been a better builder than a footballer gets on our top 50 list

glad to see peschisolido in there though one of my personal favourite blades :)

Memorable of course but Monty wouldn't get top 100 all time Blades based on actual ability or performances.

Arthur Brown is the only United player to have been the top scorer in the top flight. If that doesn't get him in the hall of fame, you might as well start the list with Bertie Menlove who had the most memorably amusing name in football.

You are right about Arthur Brown (played for us between 1902 and 1908). He scored a lot of goals for us at a very young age also the old offside rule (pre 1925) made it harder for teams to score

Brian Richardson, Gerry Summers, Len Allchurch, John Tudor, Dave Powell, Colin Addison all should be in there somewhere I think.

Colin Addison and John Barnwell were both under rated IMO.

Myfavourite players were Bill Punton and Trevor Hockey.

Wish Dave Powell was playing today . The CB issue would be sorted - Class
