Morning all, Sunderland fan here. Am wondering what your thoughts are on Greg Halford and Anthony Stokes, and what the chances are of you signing them on a permanent basis

Stokes has done "ok" on a few occasions after coming on as a sub. But I don't really rate him at all.

I'd be more than happy signing Halford on a permanent basis! I think he's had a good time at the lane:D

I agree with Ciderman. I'd be happy with Halford as a permanent signing, you can have Stokes back.

Don't rate Stokes at all. Although, i quite like Halford. He wouldn't be a bad buy at all!

Stokes impressed me at first but has gone right off the boil, don't want him permenantly. Halford on the other hand I like as a player and would sign him permenantly in the summer.

Stokes isn't really suited for our style of play. That's not to say he's rubbish per se, just that in our system - or lack thereof, at times - he doesn't flourish, nor can I see him ever doing so.

Thanks guys - pretty much what I expected. Glad to see Halford is benefiting a run of games, and would be happy to get rid of both after Keane left us with a squad of 40+ highly paid pros. Not suprised at the comments re Stokes - he will be playing League of Ireland within 5 years by my reckoning.

I reckon both are average Championship players.

Maybe the main reason they are not regulars in our slightly better than average squad.

Stokesy is a precocious talent imo. He just needs a run of games to find his goal touch which has deserted him since Falkirk.

Either way we must snap him up on a permanent deal now, otherwise the likes of Bohemians and Drogheda will swoop

TopCat... just wondered if you were still around and had any ideas what kind of wages Halford was on with you?

I know Stokes was/is on around £14k a week which is something we would not be prepared to pay.

After Halford's contribution last night and the way he just seems to get on with filling in wherever he's needed without any fuss, he would be a useful player to have around.

But as ever, it might come down to money.

sunderland fans were more than happy to get rid of halford at the time he left the club > it looks as if we suit him better

The issue is if he's playing for a contract... when/if that contract is forthcoming, will he still be putting the same commitment and effort in?

Apparently, he's calmed down somewhat after his rumoured controversial shenanigans but as I said, the only issue I can see is that Sun'lan will want to recoup some cash and Halford will want decent wages - United won't want to spend it.

Just on this point, surely the actions of the club in the past few days have given the players that are currently playing for a contract the insight that the club will pay wages that they can afford to move the club forward. They wont stand for crazy amounts of money being paid just because!
