As i've met quite a few of you in the past, some of you will be aware that in the past my lifestyle has hardly been textbook stuff. I've always been quite a big drinker, heavy smoker and my diet consisted of fast food, takeaways, fry up's and everything else that wasn't good for you, and very little of the good stuff.

On New Year's Day this year i resolved to get a bit fitter, as i was fed up of being overweight, horribly out of shape, and i was travelling with a one way ticket to fat hell, so i took up running.

I've been running since 1st Jan this year, and on the first run i couldn't even get to the bottom of the road without coughing and spluttering my guts up, and gradually worked hard by going for runs 2 or 3 times a week, to the extent that a couple of months back i decided to set myself a target of doing the Great Yorkshire Run in September and raising a bit of money for a very worthy cause by doing it.

This week i have for the first time cracked the 10k mark, which is the length of the run, the time wasn't impressive, but what was impressive for me is the fact that i have gone from struggling to reach 100 yards at the start of the year, to be being able to run 100 times that distance.

I've also made a few attempts to kick the smoking. This current attempt is 3 and a half weeks in, and started the day after the play off final. I've also only had one minor drinking session in this time, as well as starting looking at my diet and trying to eat healthier. It's working as i'm 2 stone lighter, infinitely fitter and this is the best thing i have ever done.

The Charity i have chosen to do this run for is the Sheffield Children's Hospital. This is a great charity and i've chosen it for two reason's. The first was that i'm a father myself, and should my son get seriously ill (which god forbid he doesn't) then the Children's Hospital is the place i would want him to be treated, and the charity does a lot of good work to support the young patients and their families, and the second reason was some very good friends of mine went through the ordeal of having their son born with a diaphramatic hernia (the same condition that killed Luey Sharp, son of Billy Sharp), and he was seriously ill for a long time, to the extent that he was by some considerable margin at Christmas 2009, and thanks to the skill and dedication of some great, great people he is now a healthy and happy 3 year old boy.

This is the link to his story

And this is the link to my just giving website, and it would great if people could sponser me as little or as much as they want, because every penny is going to a great cause.

type of post I wish I could write (Too lazy-so respect to you Brownie)

Good work Brownie.

I'll be doing the run myself following a similar realisation. That and drunkenly promising to do it for someone. Exercise definitely makes you feel better. So far I'm up to about 8k but had to take a couple of months off after doing my knee in.

Good luck on the day.

Good on you guys - I'm a fat lad turned runner (and slightly less fat lad) and know how much hard work you need to put in so all the very best!

Started from a similar point myself 6 years ago. Very unfit and watched the London Marathon on TV and thought "I could do that!" Made a bet with a friend that we would run the New York Marathon together. I did it, he didn't! I've kept running since as it'd be stupid to have got fit and then to let it go again, although my fitness level does fluctuate! I'd recommend you do the same although from what you've said you will. I've found the best way to motivate myself to train is to enter a couple of events each year. I'm doing the Great North Run in September. My missus is running with me for the first time and she's running for charity so I might be begging myself in the near future!

Good luck and enjoy the day. Donation made.

Yes, but your marathon efforts were a proper run, Brownie's only doing about a quarter of that, 10k is a bit of a girlie distance in my view, I wouldn't get out of bed for less than 10 miles :-)

You've got to start somewhere! I forgot to mention that I always run in the sacred stripes too! Get the stripes on Brownie!

Thankyou very much, it is appreciated.

Like all the best laid plans of mice and men, it was an idea hatched around Christmas time on the kop whilst having imbibed a few, and my best mate suggested it, i'd said that yeah, i'll do. Sarcastically he laughed at the idea of me doing anything other than drinking, smoking or eating, yet i gave it a shot, and he hasn't even started any running yet.

My plan is to do the Great Yorkshire 10k, and then in December i'm going to do the Percy Pud 10k round Damflask, as i love running up there.

Got a ten-miler back from work planned for the next couple of weeks. A few weeks ago the prospect of running it would have scared me, but now in a bit of a perverse way it excites me.

Thanks for the donation as well Trig ;)

I ran the London Marathon last year in a United shirt given to me by the club without the sponsor's logo on it. I got the Alzheimer's Society logo printed on it instead. Maybe the club could help you with a shirt if that was something you fancied doing. I contacted Richard Batho and he sorted it for me. The other thing I considered doing was having the United badge printed onto the charity running top but because I got the shirt from SUFC I didn't go down that road.

Running in the club colours makes me feel good even if I do get mistaken for a Sunderland fan half the time!:)

Just to update. I had a couple of weeks off as i was beginning to suffer with sore shins, and thought my body could do with some rest, so i ended up on the ale all weekend last weekend. Got up yesterday and treated myself to some new running shoes, and then decided to break them in, as all my old aches and pains had gone.

Ended up deciding to do a 10k yesterday, before going out there at a slower pace, felt really good when i was out running, and just decided to keep on going, and going and going, and ended up at about 12k, deciding to really push myself and challenge myself, and this was the result

AxjkDJRCQAALndC.jpg:medium

Not the quickest by any shot, but by doing it, i've been out there and proved to myself that i can run for a long distance, and that all the hard work is starting to pay off. I'm aching like mad today, can hardly walk as muscles in my legs that i never knew existed, but i took it steady and got the results i wanted.

Now anyone who knows me, would have laughed a few months back when i said i wanted to run a distance like that, so its a great achievement to prove people wrong, and i can't wait for the Great Yorkshire Run to come, because know i know that i can easily do that distance and hope that i can do it in a decent time.

Bloody hell, I did a half marathon about 4 years ago and did it in 1 hour 37 mins and you are about 10 years younger than me. Pull your socks up!

Seriously, well done, exercise is actually very good for the soul and it doesn't really matter how quick or slow you are.

Keep it up!

Yeah, but i suspect what you refuel with are somewhat different to what i've spent the last few yeare refuelling with.

One thing that i have noticed is that, the optimum time to go for a run is when i'm either pissed off, or stressed out, as i can guarantee that when i come back those feeling are gone.

Aye but how much mojo does the dazzler expend elsewhere? :D

In that case, running back from Bramall Lane after home games should do the trick, with the added bonus of saving money and helping your carbon footprint! :)

Well yes.

My entire smoking history is one puff on a fag when I was about 20 (ooh err missus) and my drug history is one pull on a joint when I was 23. I drink occaisionally but can take it or leave it - I can go for weeks without having a drink and it doesn't bother me. I do have a weakness for crap food, but try to curb it.

As people are aware my main vices are of the carnal variety, but even that has calmed down lately what with the arrival on the scene of the new girlfriend. We go to the odd club together, but are generally practically (if not theoretically) monogamous.

How's the training going Brownie?

It's not been going great for the last few weeks. Been suffering with a sore knee, so just been going out and doing basic maintence rather than going out really pushing it. Been doing a couple of steady 5k runs a week to keep my hand in, without wanting to push it any more than i need to, and aggrivate my knee furthur. With less than 4 weeks to go to my run, i feel that in all honesty i could do it tomorrow and do it justice, so just trying to keep at the same standard.

2 days to go i do this run, and i finished off my training last weekend, i was down at my sisters in Plymouth, i did a 8k run around the foot of Dartmoor in wind and heavy rain with my brother in law, and his best mate who is a Royal Marine, and absolutely loved it.

I'm expecting to do in around 1 hour, to 1 hour and 10 minutes, and if anyone is there watching, i'll be running in a Children's Hosptial Running Vest.

Still plenty of time for people to give, and i can't think those on here who have already given enough, as it has been a fantastic gesture from people who are still pretty much strangers to me, but if you can spare a few bob to help me raise a few quid for a superb cause, then please feel free.

Well done to Brownie, who I'm assuming from the photos of him wrapped in tin foil managed to complete the run this morning :)

Edit: he did, and looking at the run site was bang on with his predicted time... 01:10:42

Cheers Foxy, and a big thanks to everyone who sponsored me, and has offered words of encouragement.

Like Foxy said i did it in 01:10:42, a personal best, and i could have done it a bit quicker but i kept back to make sure i had something left for the end.

I've had a brilliant time doing it, and i'm proud that i did it, especially after being that out of shape i couldn't get to the bottom of my road without being out of breath when i took up running.

I've also raised around £300 for the Sheffield Childrens Hospital, a superb cause.

Now, i'm going to celebrate with a hot bath, a couple of beers, and i'll probably spend this afternoon crashed out on the settee.
