@TransferCentre9 Sheffield United interested in former Brighton Gordon Greer #sufc #bhafc

Hope so. Experienced, solid leader.

I don't want many more old players, but if you want them anywhere then it's at centre half. Greer played quite a lot of games for Brighton last season and has been their captain for a long time. I'm sure he's got at least one good L1 season left in him. Would be a perfect mentor for younger centre halves too.

Yeah sounds great, another geriatric slower than me who'd want biggish wages with no resale value....isn't that what's bit us into this mess ?

Aaron Pierre from Wycombe please

An experienced head at CB isn't that bad. Craig Short was old & slow but still knew where to be and was decent in our promotion season.

No. This is potentially another Hammond. We want the best young L1 centre half.

Any scepticism when it comes to signing older players is understandable - almost every one we've signed whilst in L1 has been a let down. But how many of those have been centre halves? I can only think of Higginbotham. Centre half is the one outfield position where age and pace is least important, especially in the lower divisions. High quality centre halves can step down to L1 in their mid thirties and be very comfortable, and I think Greer would be next season. Same goes for the likes of Mike Duff and Clint Hill. Signing one or two young centre halves in addition to someone like that would be ideal - Greer, Tafazolli and Pierre/Nelson for example.

Would he really want a move from the south coast up north just for one year? Probably better options both for him and us id say

Exactly what i thought when reading the original post, Craig Short type signing... Could do a lot worse.

what are the odds of baptise being available - he was out of contract wasn't he?

presumably would want to play higher up but if you don't ask you don't get.

He came up in conversation yesterday as I spoke to a Brighton mate – reckons he's no longer able to keep up with Championship football, which is why it's a good time for him to leave, but would be able to do a job at League 1.

Baptiste is not out of contract hes only been at Boro since the beginning of last season
Weve no chance of signing him permanently season long loan may be an option

I'd take him on a 1 year contract. Would be a good addition with a quick centre back at the side of him.

Absolutely pointless clearing out old, slow crap and replacing it with old, slow maybe not quite so crap !!!

Aaron Pierre was in league 2 team of year and is a monster, get him signed....if we r going for an older type I'd have someone like Buxton from Derby who already lives up here and is hard as nails

Yep . As we found out to our peril last season , there is no pace in league 1 and it's a bit like walking football . Bloke would fit in very nicely . If he cannot keep up with championship football does not mean he would be ok in league 1 , although centre back , the first 6 yards is in your head. .

Wilder with the speed he is acting , will have all positions , players sorted .

All we have to do is trust his judgement .

That guy from Brighton will want a move near home or in the M25 orbital.

Hammond at Centre Half perhaps?

If you watched the pigs play off games, Greer was the weak link in both games for Brighton, he hardly played towards the end of the season having lost his place to Goldson, and old, slow centre half in a league where pace is key is not what's required.

Pace is not at all key for centre halves in this league.

There are less quick attackers at this level and even then teams usually aren't good enough to get them into positions to expose slow defences.

Pace was never a problem for Maguire.

Didn't you know? We can only sign big, athletic quick young players now. No experience, or actual ability.

Greer has been a tremendous servant to Brighton.
It's unfortunate he hasn't got the legs for another season in the Championship. In all fairness, I'm not sure he had the legs for last season but he played commendably, a real top class pro.
What he lacks in pace he makes up for in reading the play and leadership, he'd be a great general and I imagine in League One he would be a massive asset.
My only concern from your point of view would be geographical. If you do sign him then I'd see that as a statement of intent, I imagine he wouldn't be willing to uproot without the firm belief that your lot are going to have a proper good go at it next season.

I think you (and some others) underestimate the quality of L1. At the top, it isn't much different to the bottom of the championship and to be good enough for a top two side, you need to be at least capable of playing in the championship (as opposed to being decent at that level).
If he's no longer good enough for the championship, he's not good enough for a top two L1 side.

We have been home from home for players over the years whose legs have gone . Not many defenders have the knowledge of Paul McGrath with the first 6 yard sprint being in his head , with great reading and knowledge of the game.

As Bush Blade rightly says , fans , managers and players underestimate league 1 , especially if you are a club wanting promotion . If you are not good enough for the championship you ain't going to automatically make it in league 1

We have learnt the hard way , we need upwardly mobile players in every position in the pitch .
