Wolves (H)
0-1 Jiménez: quick break from Wolves, Lundstram lunges in unnecessarily on halfway and with Baldock and Basham still up the pitch that leaves Egan and O'Connell to try and cover three Wolves attackers. Egan is drawn to the ball carrier, O'Connell has to fill an enormous gap leaving Jiménez free 8 yards out to tap past Ramsdale who has no chance.
1604929310462.png
0-2 Saiss: from an outswinging corner, O'Connell bumps Stevens under the flight of the ball leaving Saiss with a free header. Ramsdale is caught flat-footed as the ball goes in at an arguably saveable height.
1604929639885.png

Villa (A)
0-1 Konsa: another outswinging corner, flicked on at the near post by Mings who's drawn two of our defenders. Stevens is caught in nomansland giving Konsa an unchallenged header back across goal. Ramsdale could have stopped it but it would have required a world class save.

1604929735757.png

Leeds (H)
0-1 Bamford: defensive positioning nightmare. Berge is fouled but nothing is givne. Baldock gives his man far too much time to get a cross in, Bamford has peeled off Robinson at the back post and is able to head home unchallenged.
1604929858208.png

Arsenal (A):
0-1 Sako: some slick one touch football opens us up and Sako is left alone at the back post to head home
1604930016714.png
0-2 Pepé: a quick one two took out four United players and got Pépé the wrong side of Stevens. If ever there was a time for a tactical foul this was it but as it was, Pépé could drive into the box unchallenged before he produced a great finish across Ramsdale and in off the far post.
1604930166923.png

Fulham (H)
0-1 Lookman: there should be little danger as Lookman picks the ball up outside our area with the defence relatively well set. However, he turns past Berge too easily then gets a lucky bounce back from Basham's attempted tackle before blasting past Ramsdale from 8 yards out.
1604930308797.png

Liverpool (A)
1-1 Firmino: Ramsdale pulls off a decent stop from Mané's close range header but no United player reacts leaving Firmino with a tap-in
1604930514735.png

1-2 Diogo Jota: a simple back post cross, headed goal with Stevens caught under the flight of the ball
1604930580016.png

Man City (H)
0-1 Walker: long range shot through a crowd into the bottom corner. A harsh criticism could be that Ramsdale's starting position means that he can't see the ball until it's past both Osborn and Stevens, both of whom turn their backs on the shot.
1604930679831.png

Chelsea (A)
1-1 Abraham: scuffed shot down into the ground, over Basham and into the corner. No chance for the keeper; big question marks over how Chelsea's #9 has so much space in our area.
1604931042306.png

1-2 Chilwell: brilliant ball in from Ziyech; Chilwell has got goalside on Lowe. Ramsdale should claim the ball but hesitates, the ball hits Chilwell and goes in (sorry about the image quality). Ramsdale is too far forward and the ball is curving in too quickly but all Lowe needs to do is lean on Chilwell and usher him out of play. Should our left back have been picking up Chelsea's left back on the right side of the defence though?
1604931104162.png

1-3 Thiago Silva: freekick from the touchline, glanced home by Silva with Ramsdale making the erroneous decision to come for the ball. Silva is left unmarked with Zouma having blocked off Stevens.
1604931249280.png

1-4 Werner: lucky break sees the ball reach Werner unopposed on the edge of our area, he blasts past Ramsdale, disguising the shot well.
1604931331653.png

In short:
  • only two goals (14%; Saiss & Thiago Silva; possibly Chilwell but that's second phase) have come from set pieces so either we're lucky or we're still defending those well
  • we've conceded a lot of goals from crosses (9 goals, 64%: Jiménez, Saiss*, Konsa*, Bamford*, Sako*, Firmino, Jota*, Chilwell, Thiago Silva*) with real issues on both sides but particularly the left backs getting caught under the ball. None of the headers (*) have been properly challenged.
  • two goals (14%) have come after United players turned their backs on shots or the opposition player got a break from a tackle (Walker, Lookman); three (21%) have had a bounce go the way of the opposition (Lookman, Abraham, Werner)
  • Ramsdale is only really at fault for Chelsea's second. There's a couple more where on another day he might make a decent or brilliant save to keep the shot out (Saiss, Konsa, Bamford) but there's an underlying question about his footwork - he gets his centre of gravity wrong when moving across his line and can't change direction quickly enough

What do we need to do?
  • tighten up on crosses coming into the area. This starts with the wide midfielders.
  • improve communication in the back line. There's a theme that a lot of goals have been conceded between the goalline and the penalty spot; only Walker's is from outside the area
  • improve aerial ability at LCB. If Stevens or Robinson are incapable of doing this then we'll have to look deeper within the squad at either Bryan or one of the U23s.
  • work on quick switches of defending side
  • employ a bit more gamesmanship - cynical fouls (Lookman, Pépé), leaning on attackers under crosses (Chilwell)
  • get closer to opposition wingers who are having too much time to pick a cross at the moment

  • work on quick switches of defending side

This was noticeable on Saturday, I know Ziyech had a good game but they switched it a hell of a lot from left to right and Lowe either didn't get close enough or dived in and got done.

What do we need to do?
  • tighten up on crosses coming into the area. This starts with the wide midfielders.

Its been noticable to me that we haven't cut out enough crosses, this is from memory rather than seeing any stats. There has been a tendency to throw a leg at it rather than the old aggression in shutting down.

As a side note, how do we feel like we are doing for second balls this year? It strikes me that we are winning a significantly lower amount of second balls, and the aggression in the press in general is much lower. Teams seem to have all the time in the world around midfield, and quality players punish it. Again, it's not a stat i've seen season wide, maybe skewed in my mind by the last couple games.

thanks for the thread mate, interesting to recap.

Bergen Blade would be proud of this analysis. :)

Good analysis thanks. Need to toughen and smarten up. More aerial ability at the back. I am with you on the press lacking aggression, said it on another thread would have liked Besic or other similar 'ratter' to give us some more teeth in midfield. Berge is good on the ball but not great defensively

Berge got completely done by Lookman in the buildup to Fulham's goal. He is also woeful in the air for someone who stands at nearly 2m tall and although he's undeniably quick in a straight line, his acceleration and turning are at times painfully slow.

On Berge's heading: I'm a couple of centimentres shorter than Berge (1.91m vs 1.95m) but I'm still tall. I used to be terrible in the air (don't get me wrong, I'm nowhere near pro!) but with a bit of work I sorted that out. It's a mindset thing as much as anything.

You forgot Villa's goal came from a corner so that's 21% conceded from a set piece. That's significant

Quality posting Balham.

Mostly terrible goals to concede at any level this seasons defence is a shambles, it's like watching Collins and McEverley. Maybe those slagging off Ramsdale unmercifully should be looking at the defence before the keeper who to be fair has been peppered in comparison to Henderson last season.

Disagree.

Whilst you are very much on the spot regarding the defending, I think you have let Ramsdale off hugely. He simply has to read the game better, and stop this 'Look everyone! I'm diving, best I can!' bollocks. Seems also whereby there was a single mindedness between Hendo and the back three last season, that is now not there at all and this alone is the tale of our demise.

I'd give Ramsdale a break if he'd saved Wolves's second, the Villa goal, the Leeds goal, at least the Arsenal first, not pushed the first Liverpool goal out the way he did, got ahand to Walker's strike and saved at least two of Chelsea's goals (like the second one)

Whilst this doesn't deflect the fact that the back three have been all over the fucking place since lockdown (even with Jack at times) the difference between Hendo and Ramsdale is much of our problem.

And we are bottom of the league. Just like eight defeats at home, first season of the fast-attacking-football Desso, no amount of explaining and smoke and mirrors will take that away.

Really interesting thread.

One of the reasons I've mentioned on another thread putting Jagielka at LCB. Our inability to defend crosses properly, often against players who are not thatb aereally dominant is something we need to cut out. There's no way a Jota, Firmino, Swiss, Chilwell scores against a dominant defender.

Almost every goal we've conceded has been via diabolical defending and extremely poor concentration. It seems endemic at the moment for us. Not sure how it can be fixed

thanks for the thread mate, interesting to recap.
This is the biggest issue for me. We may not have the same squad quality as the top teams but last season we didn’t give them the time or space to play. The intensive pressing game doesn’t require world class players, just fitness and an understanding of how to do it in a coordinated way. If you give top players time and space, they will tear you up.
If we can rediscover the self belief to go at the opposition, results will come. Its not the same as a gung ho approach, we still need a solid defensive performance but we won’t be on the back foot as much and without the ball for long periods which is tiring and mentally draining.
As has been said many times, some of the team are just off the pace and we can’t return to our best until they are or others are given the chance. Biggest issues are Stevens being played out of position and Lundstram, who seemingly can’t be arsed.

Maybe think about putting Jags in as sweeper to mop up and organise the defence. Albeit very very slow as Champers says he is strong in the air so may cut that danger out too...

Disagree.

No goalkeeper in the world - not even an elite one at the level of Marc-André ter Stegen, Manuel Neuer or Jan Oblak - is going to stop half of those shots you're expecting Ramsdale to keep out. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he's playing particularly well (for sake of clarity: he's not) but there's no point putting unrealistic expectations on him. I agree entirely that the communication and conviction between defence and goalkeeper is missing.

If I was involved in the goalkeeper coaching at United I'd be telling "Rambo" to create a minor injury to withdraw from U21s duty then spend the next two weeks peppering him with crosses from all angles. We've enough bodies that we can recreate the current match situations as he simply has to improve his positioning and reactions on crosses.
