Yes, the second was very well worked, Billy's movement is excellent to find a yard of space. The first was a strange one! Don't think the keeper and defender on the line covered themselves in glory!

The second is a great goal - back to front in 4/5 passes and no thought of pissing about passing sideways or backwards in the middle of the park. Great strike from Reed early on too, shame it didn't result in a goal as it would've been a screamer.

A very good goal, and great to watch but doesn't all the pissing about earlier open up these opportunities?

Opposition players are tired physically and mentally from chasing the ball and covering runs earlier in the game - eg ten minutes in I reckon the player who lunges to cut out the ball to Sharp would have made the interception - 75 minutes in it's much harder.

Yeah that second goal is great but that is absolutely a bad mistake from the defender. You'd expect a man in his position to cut that pass out. Whether or not it happened because we tired them out I couldn't say, as I wasn't there.

Certainly is but I think the pace of the attack had him a bit wrong footed. Don't think that's something I ever said last season!

Its more a comparison to our team attitude & tactics from last season - agree you have to be smart in possession throughout the game but not so much that it nullifies your own attacking ability - the main frustration from last season. Another good stat is the 6 shots on target from 9 attempts.

Someone said that last season our players would stride forwards...make a sideways pass and...then feel that their job was done.

This season I think it fits into a bigger picture of "game management" to use a current buzz phrase.

A percentage sideways or backwards pass retaining possession as part of a bigger picture is a much better option than a hopeful forward pass which loses possession.

If you retain possession for its own sake then that of course is meaningless.

(The possession can look aimless if the opposition are well set up eg yesterday it was 55-45 in Swindon's favour but we were well organised. Their fans might think they were aimless but it's not really their fault: there was just no way through for almost all of the game.)

Last season under Clough it was all so slow and predictable. The players were clearly scared to death to lose possession and always opted for the safe ball. Consequently on the occasions where we created space, we didn't exploit it but instead played another square ball, meaning the opposition defence were able to regroup and get back behind the ball, which was so frustrating to watch.
Retaining possession and making the opponents chase the ball is about pulling players out of position and creating space, but having done so, you then need to move the ball quickly to reap the benefits. Adkins team does that and the results speak for themselves, as I believe will this seasons average attendance figures :)

Lovely first touch lay-off from Sammon, good positive play by Woolford and a perfectly weighted pass, followed by a clinical finish. Brilliant stuff.

The attack was well worked, Sammon looked like the better option for a second or so, and I thought the pass to Billy would have been harder to work a chance from, but the defender totally put himself out of the game with that lunge.

Yes, that bloke gets totally involved the celebration doesn't he?
