The recent thread on Mel Rees brought on memories of goalkeepers that have plied their trade at BDTBL in my time of watching United, so I invite all viewers to give us their own memories through the years.

I started watching United properly in 1967/8 season, when the incomparable Hodgy reigned supreme even though he was nearing the end of his career, & I knew that whoever followed him would have a tough act to follow. Since then we have had many goalkeepers, some good, some bad, some ugly, & some superb. In no particular order of ability the ones that stand out for me were John Hope, Tom McAlister, Simon Tracey, Keith Waugh, Alan Kelly, Mel Rees, Kenny, Jim Brown maybe. There are of course many more, some you might prefer over the ones mentioned, & if so why?

For me, & I know he didn't have a long career with us, but John Hope began in style, was big & commanding & capable of making stunning saves. It is said a back injury hampered him from '74, & a loss of form & confidence meant he just sort of faded away, but for our promotion winning season & our first back in the top division, he was superb.
Alan Kelly was almost an identikit 'keeper, tall & athletic, brave too, & I couldn't fault him in any way in his time here, well deserving of legendary status.
Simon Tracey was a bit different, not particularly tall for a 'keeper, he often looked disinterested in games & was so laid back it is a wonder he didn't nod off leaning against a post sometimes, but he was also wonderfully athletic, in fact I think his best was fractionally better than Kelly's best, but Kelly was more consistent. another legend for me.
Keith Waugh, probably the most calming keeper I have seen, if we were under pressure he could keep the ball for what seemed like minutes, aided by the old rules of course, but still. He was organised himself, & demanded the same from his defence, & had a good all round game, rather than being spectacular.
Much has been said already about Mel, of which I concur, but I will leave it at that for now.

What say you?

I say, we need to secure the services of a good keeper ASAP.

Alan Kelly certainly the best we have had in my time watching united.. then kenny and tracey just behind!

Aswell as having some good established keepers we seem to have had loads what didnt have a long spell at ours for whatever reason aswell, Billy Mercer, Andy Goram and Mark Bunn what spring straight to mind but if you sit down and think could get a right list even from early 90's!

A lot has been written / said about the reasons for our decline in 2011-2016 ish, but IMO the failure to get an adequate goalkeeper was the primary reason. Between Kenny going and Moore arriving we were very weak in goal, and this coincided with the club's decline / recovery almost exactly.

I started watching united as a 4 year old in the 88/89 season. I gradually got into football over the following years and by 92, I was hooked, just in time to see Kelly's rise to greatness. I saw plenty of Tracey but slightly older blades say his best years were the late 80s at which time I was probably too young to appreciate him resulting in Kelly being my all time favourite. As a wannabe 'keeper myself as a kid, Kelly was the one I always wanted to emulate. Absolutely incredible 'keeper.

It is true that we've been blessed with any number of very good goalkeepers over the years . I wish I could say that at the moment but I can't, even if we do sign Blackman.

My top 6 would be :-

Alan Kelly
Alan Hodgkinson
Ted Burgin
Mel Rees
Tom McAlister
Jim Brown ( who made the best save I've ever seen at Bramall Lane, against Chelsea I believe)

God, looking back we have had some shit since Hodgy.

1. Kelly
2. McAlister
3. Hodgy

Honourable mentions for Rocking Horse Shit for Brains, The Gonk and Mel.

What say you?

I enjoyed reading that and I agree with almost all that you have said.

I think John Hope was a fascinating case study. He was some things that Hodgy wasn’t. at first. He was tall, young, trendy. He was superlative in his early days but the lad had problems. Confidence being the main one. The poor lad literally went to pieces and his goalkeeping was simply disastrous as time went on. Terrible shame but the truth is he emerged as one of the worst goalkeepers ever in our history. We can’t gloss over that if we are being truthful.

You missed out Paddy Kenny. Who was an enigma and a bit of an idiot at times. But he was a very good goalkeeper at his peak. One of the best in the last 25 years imo.

Keepers I remember fondly, and rated highly:-
Kenny
Kelly
Tracy
Rees
Waugh
Burridge

Keepers I was glad to see the back of:-
Richardson
Conroy
Howard
Segars
Blackwell :p

.

His only poor game in 1971 was the 5-0 defeat at West Ham. Got selected twice for the England u23s. Remember his long throws?

Alan Kelly 1/4 final v Coventry. Legend.

Got to say though I’ve never been more confident of a keeper coming out for a cross then I have this season with Blackman. He will play for England one day.

His only poor game was the West Ham one ?!! I don't think so.

I was at that game and he had an absolute shocker, but there were several more to come before we finally replaced him, as Cerberus rightly points out.

What were his other poor games in the year 1971 then? It was in January 1972 when his confidence went and he was eventually dropped from the team in April. Suffered a knee injury in his first reserves match and was out of action for over a year.
