Wigan have parachute payments? We have money but have wasted it in the wrong places of the squad in my opinion so we are now tied into FFP and will struggle to sign any more players without shipping some out.

Don't think the benefactor model is likely to work for us as the Prince has been quite open in stating that he will want returns on his investment so don't think he will throw good money after bad. I'd like a good GK and either another CB or CDM but think we also need to move on at least 5 out of Alcock, McFadzean, Cuvelier, Scougall, Baxter, Coutts, JCR, Higdon, McNulty as well as maybe loan deals for the likes of Dimaio, Khan, Whiteman, De Girolamo etc.

And...

just seen Wigan have signed Juusi Jaskalineen on a one year deal. Big, strong and very experienced goalkeeper who has spent his entire career in the Premiership.

And people wonder why we are now in our 5th season in this godforsaken hinterland, this explains a lot

They've also got O'Donnell as well. Someone mentioned it in the Rumours section, but Kelvin Davies on loan or a year would be a good shout.

No idea why people want Baxter or Coutts out, or JCR for that matter.
On their day all very capable performers in this league and worth having in the squad

Yep - JCR's last decent game for us was Preston at home
Coutts best match for us was the second leg of the play off semi
Baxter - erm, Baxter, erm FA Cup Semi vs Hull?

On their day :)

Just wish they'd have a few more :(

Fine but let's not pretend investment isn't an option.

He's got two choices, carry on investing 'small' amounts of money to prop us up each season and hope we go up before he runs out of what he's prepared to put it. If we don't, he has no more chance of getting a return on his investment than McCabe did.
Or he can accept that we stand a much better chance of promotion if we get the players we need in now, and risk not shifting the 'dead wood'. If he doesn't grasp the nettle now, before the window closes, we won't go up.

And if he thinks he can make a profit from his investment, I would love to see his business plan. I think KM's pulled his pants down.

Because we'd obviously replace them with better players, like we always do.

I don't disagree with the notion that those players are good on their day which is why instead of specifically those 3, I said 5 from a list of about 10 which included them. Because we could also add Scougall, Cuvelier, McNulty and even Higdon to the list of players that are good on their day. The fact is, we have too many players of that type. We also have too many number 10s (especially considering we are playing 442). Therefore, something has to give. I think NA needs to see which of these players he thinks he can get performing with a degree of consistency and move some of the others on. Personally, I would probably be more inclined to move on Alcock, MCFadzean, Scougall, Flo and Higdon than JCR, Coutts and Baxter but then someone like Scougall could go elsewhere and do well whilst Baxter and Coutts continue to frustrate.

I'm not convinced signing 40 year old goalkeepers would have changed our fortunes too much.

JCR has been very good in pre season and despite his inconsistencies is well worth having at the club
Coutts best match was his last one for us, exactly
Baxter also had a brilliant pre season and is a very very capable performer. Is he a 2 man midfield guy? Probably not, but he can certainly play very well in a deep or advanced role in a 3.

we should show we meam business by signing neville southall hes experienced and about the same age as jaskeileinen

this is probably the weakest slagging off post Ive ever seen

yes weve lost a match with a shocking performance but Wigan signing a pensioner is not really proving fuck all

lets try and be constructive instead of pathetic cheap shots of no consequence or relevance
id expect this sort of crap from a wednesday fan

Don't disagree with JCR - can make a real difference
I was only talking about games that mattered - fuck pre season

Oh, and I only saw the Cheltenham game live but brilliant, it was not
Baxter's sole contribution was to trip over a ball in from Murphy then slot it. Cool finish but not one through ball or one cross or decisive moment from him in the 35-40 he was on the pitch - too short a time to gauge but maybe our definitions of brilliant are markedly different?

We have many players who are good 'on their day'. They are of little or no use if their day is 1-5 games. We need players who are consistently, or at least regularly, good. And not players who dreadful when it's not their day. We can possibly carry one or two 'on their dayers' in a squad but not most of the squad.

There are a number of players I'd cart out before these

I'm disappointed with NA's approach tbh. I thought with the players we have he'd go for at a minimum, 4411. He seems to want to rip up what Clough was trying to build and start afresh, which is OK if the board is prepared to back him. If he's got to work with what he has then surely it's a matter of tweaking, not wholesale tactical changes that require new personnel.
I said time and time again on BM that successful clubs set their own playing philosophy and bring in managers who adhere to that. See Swansea.
I expected a manager of Adkins' ability to be able to adapt to what he's got. I didn't expect him to be out-thought by a relatively inexperienced manager who spotted our weaknesses and exploited them.
Whilst I still think he's the man to get us up, so far I'd give him 2 out of 10, not taking into consideration the signing of Edgar, who I know little about.
He's got just over two weeks to either start playing to the strengths of the players we have or get some new ones in who can do what he needs.

Assume this is why Wigan's talks with Kirkland broke down then - said it on another thread but we really should be going for him!! Kirkland with Howard as back up would sort the keeper situation.

The OP is spot on.

No matter how we try to dress it up, Wigan have hung us out to dry this pre-season.

So the key to getting out this division is signing a 40 year old keeper who hasn't played since February, if only Wilson, Weir, Clough and Adkins knew this.

Jesus wept.
Hehe it might be look at the state of our keepers ;)

not quite his entire career, he dropped into the second tier with bolton by the looks of things for 3 season and was in finland for 5 season

had this been 5 years ago... or even 3.... I would have sat up and thought wow... but this guy is now 40 years old... Imagine if they had bought Emile Hesky... (also spent the majority of his life in the top flight...also at the end of his career...) would there be the same fan fare....

I remember getting Ian Rush.... aged 36....

Just seen Bristol City are splashing out £6m on Dwight Gayle.

If we had somehow gone up could anyone see us signing a player like us? Under the current regime we would have been scouring the free transfer market like tramps rummaging through the Tesco bins.

I'd prefer a 28 year old Mark Howard with a settled back four than a relic from the 90's.

The GK is not the issue, it's the 4 players directly in front of him that need looking at and hopefully with Edgar in and 3 weeks left of the window we will be good.

GK is an issue though as Howard doesn't have a great fitness record and our back ups aren't up to the job at the mo. I would put Howard in the "OK" bracket as a keeper, but would like to see us have someone better in there personally.
