Passing sideways and backwards can help create space and open things up going forward out of defence but in the last third we need to give our strikers (McGoldrick + ANO) something to challenge. In the last third nobody seems to take responsibility, we keep passing sideways and back. Seems to me it is time to "get it in early and often." As Edwards always said, if we play tippy tappy round the penalty area strikers never know when to make a run and end up as stationary targets that are easy to mark. At least if we get it in the box, and you know, take a shot who knows what might happen.

I think the OP used to sit near me on the South Stand, every time we looked like making a pass it was “gerritinboxfucksake”. His mate was partial to a good “shoooooooottttttt” shout even if we were 45 yards out on the angle.

I do remember those days and the header was intended to remind us of the days when lobbing the ball anywhere into the opponents half was OK because the idea was to try and win the ball wherever it bounced and attack from there - not what I am saying. We are waiting too long to play it into the box as players are not ready to take responsibility - safer to pass off to someone five yards away than taking the 'risk' of being the one whose cross hit nobody; it's all a matter of confidence.

It’s not working because Billy is too old to get on the end of them at this level I think.

I’m just saying that’s always been the strategy, not that we shouldn’t mix it up. But getting it in earlier probably isn’t going to work either.

I agree. The patient build-up play, to find that perfect ball into the box, doesn’t work in the Premier League for sides such as ours. How many of our goals have we scored since being in the PL that’s been through this slow, laborious method? Very few. Look back at some of the memorable goals last season and the speed at which we work the ball into the box is the polar opposite to what we see now (Man Utd game at home being a prime example).

Our standard attack now is to; (a) knock it long for McBurnie to head it on to their defender, or (b) get it out wide to the wing backs, who take it forward with no support, meaning the ball gets worked all the way back to Ramsdale within 2/3 passes who then reverts to strategy (a).

Watch the Everton game back and look how quickly they get the ball into and around our area.
