Centre half, surprisingly released by Barnsley.

They had offered him a contracted however that's now been revoked (apparently he missed the decision deadline).

Anyone seen much of him?

Barnsley supporter on 365 is gutted and says he's a cracking player.

Got to think he's maybe looking a division above.

This is the George Williams who played for us???

Shocked, maybe he's got an offer from elsewhere then...

If not...go grab him quick...he's a great lad, bang on the right attitude for the game, runs up and down the right side all game tirelessly and totally the progressive sort who will improve his game and learn from experience/mistakes.

Don't think he's a centre back, he's only 5.9 tall and appears to be a full back; is full back a position we need to strengthen though? We've already signed Hussey of course and Brayford will no doubt be first choice right back and we have Basham and Kelly as cover there.

I have a hunch this is because he's gone on holiday!!!

He's bezzy mates with Daniel Nti (Worcester striker/winger, we're waiting on him to sign a new contract or not coincidentally!).. They've played football together since they were 5 and went to school together, Loughborough Uni which is where we signed both up from a couple of years ago... Nti joined in the celebrations at Leicester City on the pitch after they won the Prem (Schlupps his mate!) and then went on 'holiday' for a couple of weeks to see his mum back home in North Africa, then came back and has stalled on signing a new contract for us thinking that maybe offers from bigger clubs will come in (he's desperate to play League football!) And now he's gone on holiday again somewhere like Mauritius...

Wouldnt be surprised if George is out there with him!

...now that is surprising..must have something lined up...

Right...gleaned some proper info, there's a couple of em from the WCFC forum doing the detective work..

(Pasted from there)

Apparently George's dad has 'come clean' on Barnsley message board (http://bbs.barnsleyfc.org.uk/showthread.php?245074-so-who-is-the-poster-named-observer). Makes for interesting reading!:

"Hello Archey, I am rumbled because yes I'm George Williams' dad. He has had an incredible time at Barnsley and genuinely wanted to stay and try his luck in the Championship. The club statement is accurate in that he was offered a contract which was subsequently withdrawn. The contract offered was the absolute minimum the club needed to offer to trigger compensation, not a penny more. George didn't feel wanted and it was made clear he would have limited chances next season. He did ask for an additional £150 per week; he was offered £1,050. It is my belief (not fact) that Hecky spoke to the Board and it was agreed to cancel the contract offer to help George in his effort to find a new club. If my belief is correct then to be fair to the club this increases his chances of finding a new club without the threat of compensation hanging over any deal.

His time at Barnsley has been like a roller coaster ride from making his league debut at Preston, not being wanted initially by LJ, sent out on loan to Barrow which proved helpful, then getting a chance to start in January due to injuries. To LJ's credit he did pull George to one side after three starts and said that he had got George completely wrong. The rest is history and I know he is very proud to have been part of such an excellent team that made Barnsley history!

Just to be clear nothing has gone on behind the scenes and his agent wasn't greedy; simply the club couldn't guarantee regular games next season and at 23 George needs to be playing regularly; his preference is and has always been to start for Barnsley. He has no other club lined up but we hope that he will be able to get a regular start in L1 given his performances since January.

The last five months have been amazing and as parents we are very proud and loved watching him and the team home and away; great club!"

Actually... The compensation triggering bit he mentioned....

Thats screwing us over as well as the player..

When George signed for Barnsley back in Dec'14 after the Scunny Cup game Worcester made sure they had put into the deal a 15-20% sell on clause, or a % should he improve his value by moving up a league...

So screw you Barnsley, thats just burnt my goodwill bridges i had towards you! :(

It's all well and good getting the inside scoop from family members but he's a grown man, should his dad really be on social media talking contracts and wages?
Personally if I had the job of my dreams I'd not turn down a contract with a club I am really happy with over £150.

Fair point From the pig end

Its nice to see them being straight and honest about it but disclosing the confidential info like wages etc is a bit naive, might harm or at least put off future clubs a bit when dealing with him if they know that stuff could get leaked.

A lot of outpouring by Barnsley fans about it, absolutely gutted they are to lose him like that...looks like their successful first XI from january onwards is being ripped up somewhat which is a little surprising considering it was young, progressive and pretty exciting what they had going.

Someone mentioned about Brayford earlier..maybe sell him to Burton as Clough would have him again for a 1m-1.5m, save a load on the wage bill as he's one of the higher earners... Get George in on a free and less wages...leaves you a tidy bit to spend elsewhere improving the squad, CB's imperative!

No you're right it was a fascinating read to be honest it just frustrates me when parents and agents get involved.
Again I almost agree with the Brayford part too but since when has selling out better players benefitted us?
If we could bring in Holmes, Irvin,Roofe and Williams with that money, great!.... But are we really still that naive in believing that'd happen?

It makes the most sound business sense totally..and footballing sense too to be honest.

Brayford is a solid dependable experienced RB yes, still good enough for the Championship if he puts his mind to it..but what is he now, 29-30? He certainly isnt going to improve or get quicker and his value will be depreciating as well.. Whereas Williams youre getting a 23yr old on a free with plenty of scope for improvement (and value increase, when you get back into the Championship he will be plenty ready for the step up) and knows the rigours of league 1 pretty well now.. No brainer really! Also he would be a Wilder type player judging by the style and tempo he was employing at Northampton...young, fit and fast , can overlap and put crosses in which was what caught the eye whilst he was with us at Worcester..and he's since had the defensive side to his game more pollished up :)

The other 3 players you mentioned plus Williams would be absolutely worth it and the way forwards definitely, if Barnsley are letting a few others go like Hourihane then i'd be jumping through hoops to pull em in before anyone else scrags them anorl!

Trouble is, should any player be guaranteed a start? It has some effect surely? Such as reducing the work effort or desire or willingness to die for the cause.

You've got to sell Brayford first for this! Not many teams will want to spend what we paid for Brayford, or match his wages. I can't see Brayford going anywhere. He's 28, so should be at his prime. If, and yes its a big if, but if we can get Brayford back to his best then we'll have the best right back outside the Premier League - in League One to boot!

fair comments re the fee and wages

....best RB outside the Prem though hmmm... i'd probably have Cyrus Christie, Jack Hunt and Chris Gunter ahead of him in the pecking order :)

Aye maybe so, but based on Brayford at his best as he was us on loan, I can't see anyone could do better. But that was on loan and he needs to get back to it next season.

Well if he doesnt then i can see Wilder taking no prisoners and not be afraid to change things, which will all be starting on the training ground in a couple of weeks when they report back in, he'll be working them harder and pulling them together more than Adkins was able to i'm sure of it.

Why do you think that? CW has never managed players who are rich and have big egos, he's managed honest pros who earn similar to what some of us on here earn, who depend on appearance payments and win bonuses.
Adkins has managed at the highest level and won promotions. He couldn't get anything out of some of them, most of them tbf.

What do you think Wilder's going to do to motivate them? He doesn't strike me as the most charismatic manager and I doubt shouting at them will make any difference. And he won't be making changes until we've signed some more players. E.g. if Freeman goes, who plays RB if Brayford doesn't buy into what CW is trying to do?

I just have a feeling Wilder will get the players running through brick walls for him thats all..the ones that won't fit in with what he's going to do he'll shift on and get in the players he wants.

I agree Jonny, and if we are right then Brayford could be the best "new" player we could ever hope to get for next season.

well he wasnt helped by the rest of his defence or defensive midfielders last season was he so it wasnt surprising he suffered a bit with his overall form.. new manager, clean slate and all that.

I don't buy into the 'rich' player argument one bit tbh, it's more of a question of being in a side that are winning often and then you get players performing. Just because CW hasn't managed in the big league doesn't mean he can't motivate. I'm sure that motivation is a quality few managers have in reality but it does appear that CW certainly has it. All indicators point to CW being able to deal with players because he more than understands the standard of football we are in at the moment and hopefully he will cope with the demands higher up should he get us moving in the right direction.
