Hasn't been in the squad for the last couple of games, but hasn't moved on.

what is the situation?

He sits in the reserves till January. That's the only possible situation, unless we pay him off.

Hopefully goes out on an 'emergency' loan, has a few decent games and we get a bit of money for him in January from one of the PL/Championship super rich who fancy adding to their 'roster'.

The emergency loan window as we knew it has now ceased to exist.

There is a slight exception where goalkeepers are concerned. They can still be signed on an emergency loan basis, but only for a period of 7 days.

Loving all the positivity guys....... Can't wait to see who your next scapegoat will be.....We are 3rd Division under achievers with no ambition and fuck all money......FUCKING DEAL WITH IT

Could it be that we ended up in the 3rd division, and stayed here, because some of our players might have been a little low on quality? Or is that scapegoating?

So who's fault is that then?.....the player? the manager? or the board?......oh it must be the player coz he must deliberately go out to have a bad game and keep us in this league......ffs get a grip......as much as I love Sheff Utd and would back any fan in a corner the majority are fucking fickle arseholes.......here's a rather radical idea, how's about supporting the team, fuck the constant negativity and ironic cheers when something goes right......players don't need to be told by 20000 people that they have fucked up, they know, its how they respond to it which makes them better. Playing with fear of your own fans does fuck all to help the situation.

Fear? What exactly do you think he is fearful of? Some moans, groans and verbals when he's dropped a bollock? That goes with the territory.

"Some moans, groans and verbals" are you for fucking real man? He got slaughtered, and still is......he and others have been subjected to the sort of hammering we should only reserve for opposition players.....why do you abuse the opposing players????? To get on their backs, get inside their heads and ultimately try and put them off their game???? Well just spare a thought for the implications of your 'moans and groans' on players when its your own fucking fans that are doing it........fucking unbelievable

Hello George!

Wilder was a bit hasty re negotiating his contract. You have to assume it was for a minimum of 2 yrs and given we are the biggest payors in league one who is going to take on his salary unless we subsidise it ?

Give George a few years and he will be a good keeper. Still learning and not the finished article. Adkin's started him to soon in front of a shit defence with no cb's

Any neutral person looking at the facts would say Sheff Utd have been the most ambitious league 1 club in recent years. We've had the best managers, some of then better players and the biggest wage budgets.
Due to the high ambition every time the manager has failed he's been sacked and paid off at massive expense.

Maybe we should stop being ambitious and do a Burton or Walsall and just let the manager do their job
But the ambition and expectation is part driven by the fans so we're partly to blame for the money being spent.

Got to agree.

Having a large passionate fanbase is a double edged source.
If we play well and seriously aim for success then it's a big advantage
If we struggle to play well then our fanbase is a big disadvantage.

Same as having ambition and expectation is a double ended sword.
It puts pressure on the players, some thrive on pressure and high standards
Other players wilt under pressure.

Over the years when ever United have a big match at BL, playoff final, semi final etc
I often hear Blades saying "what's the point in thinking we'll win because we KNOW we will fail"
If we hit the post in a big match, many say "that's it....we can't win.... It's fate"

If the players and managers are aware of our bad luck and fate to lose big matches
Then I wonder if it has any effect on our players.
If someone is told over and over again... You will fail.. You will fail... You will fail
Then doesn't the negativity become a self fulfilling prophesy?
Maybe the real problem within the club is the cloud of negativity.

Totally agree with you with regards the shocking treatment of Long during games this season. Really shouldn't have happened, however it's become clear that George isn't all round good enough for us. Appreciate that he's still young but he's dropped bollocks left, right and centre for sometime now and isn't learning from then. How long is it since Paddy Madden made him look a real mug playing for Yeovil at the lane? There's a chance he might improve but he needs a fresh start. Adkins stuck by him as did Wilder to begin with but you only get so many chances

very much agree. George isn't what we need and I think he will struggle here no matter what. Might yet make a decent goalie somewhere else. Did make me smile when yet another free shot on Saturday was spilled by Moore, leading to their goal. Not just Long to blame

Nobody said he was bad deliberately. At least I didn't.

No idea what any of this has to do with me not supporting the team when they're on the pitch. Do you just not understand what a scapegoat is? Because bad boards, bad managers, bad players; those are explanations, not scapegoats.

Personally I thought the defence was to blame for reacting too slowly. It was hit with some power. Difference was that if it had been George in goal half the kop would have wanted him hung from the roof. After the last two home games though there is definitely a feel of calm that Moore is more reliable

More to the point he's not in the goal

Maybe. Maybe not?

"Goalkeeper George Long was offered and signed a revised two-year contract by Wilder in June. Two months later the player was told by the very same man he could leave if he wished after Simon Moore arrived from Cardiff City. Long suffered a bumpy start to the season but where was the surprise in that? Remember, Wilder is also a fan and had already seen enough of the keeper to know that he isn’t by any means the finished article and prone to errors. Again man management and judgment called into question. Long is guaranteed to be back on the bench at the Priestfield Stadium as Aaron Ramsdale is on England Under-19 duty." Link

With the high profile managers and high wages came a prerequisite that it was promotion at all costs. If anyone thought they weren't up to it, they didn't have to come to us. No sympathy for any of the managers as they get paid off for NOT achieving. Very few players have this option (except Hammond and Woolford). Long has been poorly treated by us as fans however, it's a two way Street. Remember how he jerked us around when he was offered a new contract? Wanted to consider his options? Think about it over the weekend, next week, by Saturday, next Monday? Sometimes in life, as in goalkeeping, you make bad choices. Maybe staying was a bad one for George. I really like the guy, don't think he was bad as made out but, really needs to work on communication and commanding his area. Once that is done, his catching and handling will improve no end. Can he improve? I don't really know but hope so for his sake. Good luck George either here or elsewhere.

For me, the lad has potential as he is still a very young age for a keeper. That said, that is all it is at the moment - potential. Shot stopping is only one element of keeping. There is handling, judging when or when not to come for crosses, sweeping up behind the defence, kicking, and communication to his colleagues. He is ok on the shot stopping but woefully inadequate on the other elements of his game which makes him a poor keeper in my book. He still has a shit load of work to put in to try and develop himself to the levels of where he should be if he wants to be SUFC number 1. He simply hasnt developed as much as we hoped he would do when he was a pup of 17. I like anyone else love to see youngsters come through the ranks to play in the first team but only if that young lad is the best we can get for that particular position, or we arent doing ourselves any favours. George was costing us and it is such a key position in the team that he had to take a step backwards. Its noticeable that no one came in for him...which i think is telling. He wanted to see what was out there as he wants to be a first choice....clearly not a lot if any takers. So for now i would hope that he accepts hes been poor, needs to work on many things and gets his head down. Hopefully he will come good and come back to be our number 1 in time cos that should mean he has developed. But for now...no thanks he simply isnt good enough. His confidence needs to be built up again aftet the fans got on his back, but i dont particularly blame the fans...i blame the imcompetent managers who kept picking a young lad in the net when he clearly wasnt ready. They did him no favours. Get your head down George and learn your trade.
