Thinking of going to Gdansk /Sopot in July for 5 days or so
Any good, any recommendations ?

Colleague of mine has an apartment in Gdansk, he says good things about the place, Mrs. G's pal went for a long weekend a few years ago and loved it, think you will have a great time.

To be honest, you can't go far wrong in Poland.

Of no help to the OP, but I was in Gdynia, Gdansk and Szczecin in the late 70's.

God it was grim.

Yeah, we went about 10 years ago, great place. We stuck around the old town (well, the rebuilt old town!) with plenty of bars and restaurants. I'm sure it's changed quite a bit since then in terms of what's available

I love Gdańsk, and every time I go to Poland to see the extended family we always try to have a couple of days in Gdansk. Couldn't recommend it enough.

Last time we went we pushed the boat out a bit and stayed in the Radisson overlooking the Motława river. Really nice area as close to all the restaurants and shops, and the promenade which is great for people watching.

Długi Targ (Long Market) is another great street and is effectively the main thoroughfare.

The Second World War museum, and The European Solidarity Centre are worth a visit if you're into that sort of thing.

A boat trip to Westerplatte is a cool thing to do, especially in the summer months.

Further afield, Malbork Castle is magnificent, and worth a visit if that's your cup of tea.

Finally, get yourself into a Bar Mleczny (Milk Bar), more like home cooked food, and prices tend to be far cheaper than the more upmarket tourist traps.

Final point is don't expect it to be dirt cheap. Yes you can go away from the tourist hot spots and save money, but if you want to stay in the centre, and eat out at the central restaurants, it won't be that cheap.

I was there on a stag do last year. Some reps kept pestering us to visit a place called ‘p***y Armageddon’ (redacted as we’re in civilised GBC) , we came back from a nightclub (a converted warehouse which was pretty good) and one of the reps was still in the main square in a deserted street at 5/6 A.M and he still had the audacity to try and get us into his dubious sounding establishment!

I was there in the middle of summer a couple of years ago, when the Euros were on. Old centre was absolutely packed full of tourists, boiling hot and it was pricey for Poland. There are a few decent pubs but you have to find them. The WW2 museum is brilliant and you can spend most of the day there. You can also take a walk round the shipyards, which are massive and being hipsterfied.

Lech Walesa is still alive btw and can occasionally be spotted in a couple of pubs.

Sorry i'm no help on Gdansk, but got a mate starting working over there in a few weeks, so me and the missus will be looking to go there later this year.

Different city, obviously, but we were in Warsaw again a couple of weeks ago and its a fantastic city, clean, safe and a really positive feel to the place. Doesn't feel overcrowded like London. Its vibrant, modern with a blend of the old and has a good mix of cultures, without feeling that you're a target for criminals. The mayor of London (and Leaders of other UK cities) could learn a lot from Warsaw and Poland generally.

So if Gdansk is anything like Warsaw, you'll have a really great and inexpensive time. If you don't mind updating the thread once you've been that would be great!

Sorry i'm no help on Gdansk, but got a mate starting working over there in a few weeks, so me and the missus will be looking to go there later this year.

Interesting you say that about Warsaw.

I've always wanted to go, but whenever I'm in Poland the family always say Warsaw is not that nice (compared to Gdańsk, Kraków, Wrocław etc).

Definitely want to visit at some point.

Of all the places I've been to in Poland, Gdańsk and Wroclaw are my favourites.

I loved Warsaw but it's quite a few years since I was last there. Krakow is great, of course, and although I have never been to Wroclaw, a colleague has been a few times on business and says it is great, like a smaller version of Krakow, but not as busy.

For somewhere a bit off the beaten track, and not an obvious place, I can recommend Poznan, I went 30 odd years ago on business, and then a couple of years ago, me and Mrs. G went for a long weekend for the Christmas markets. We had a great time, found some great bars, many with local craft beers on.

Both great destinations. Gdansk is lovely, but not that lively. Sopot comes to life at night.

I went a couple of months ago, -18 degrees at night and the river had completely frozen over. Probably a decent place to go now
