From the star...

BRYAN Robson is considering an audacious loan move for Gary Speed as he attempts to reverse Sheffield United's poor start to the season.
Robson today pledged to press ahead with his search for midfield reinforcements following his yesterday's capture of Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley.

Robson has made the position top priority as he seeks to address the problems which have contributed to United's difficulties in the league.
Speed, aged 38, is believed to be among the names under consideration following his decision to resign his coaching position with Bolton Wanderers.

Despite being among the favourites for promotion, Robson's team have struggled to adapt to life in the Championship and will start Saturday's match against Preston North End in 20th position.

Acutely aware of the need to inject a dash of creativity into a squad high on industry but, on current evidence, low on invention, Robson knows he is facing possibly the most important choice of his brief but eventful reign at Bramall Lane.

Despite suffering defeat in his bid to lure Bolton duo Ivan Campo and Stelios to South Yorkshire, the United manager has steadfastly refused to lower the criteria uses to assess would-be recruits.

While he admits identifying realistic targets has proved to be "problematic", he is growing increasingly confident of making his second breakthrough in the loan market this week.

Having scoured the length and breadth of the country, Robson is now understood to have whittled down the possibilities to three or four names with Manchester United's Darron Gibson and an unnamed Brazilian also believed to feature on his wanted list.

However, Gibson is expected to join Wolves while Newcastle could provide competition for Speed's signature.

"I'm still looking for a midfielder and hopefully something will happen shortly," Robson told The Star. "It's been problematic but I'm pressing ahead because I think that's an area we need to look at and give ourselves more options."

Robson turned to Bardsley after injuries to Derek Geary and Gary Naysmith caused further disruption
to his defence.

The Manchester United full-back, who has previously enjoyed spells at Aston Villa, Rangers, Burnley and Royal Antwerp, is expected to make his debut against Preston after he formally completes his move later this week. "He'll bring us balance where we need it," added

Robson. "Phil has the experience to come in and he's desperate to play."

United captain Chris Morgan and three other members of the first-team squad will be serving pink cocktails to patients at Sheffield's Weston Park Hospital later today as part of the club's support of the hospital's Cancer Appeal and Breast Cancer Research campaign.

Can't see Speed coming, although it would be fantastic,.

Does anybody remember a few weeks ago the other Bolton players we were linked with? And what happened with them?
Why not ask Barcelona for Deco? Or ask Man Utd for Giggs?
Pie in the sky. Lots of talk of signing big name players, and we get Cahill and Bardsley. No disrespect to those two, but Robson needs to do something positive. He talks one hell of a strategy, but I haven't seen much evidence of it so far.

Probably so, he has great fitness, but no one else seems to have taken an interest and we've taken an initiative!
watch everyone make a bid now!

I reckon he could be persuaded, although probably by a large paycheck rather than his hunger to play for us but if we were to sign him i for one would have no problems as he knows exactly what to do and would bring some skill and experience to the midfield. However i also hoped that Hendrie would be the man to bring the skill to midfield that we so badly need and although i still rate him and know he is capable of being a very good player for us he hasn't produced anything special for us.........yet
Could Speed be the new Mccall?:;):

We need a player like McCall was for us

he finished off our midfield that year

He was class

Bolton's Speed rejects Sheffield Utd move
tribalfooball.com - October 16, 2007

Gary Speed will reject a loan move to Sheffield United in an effort to force his way back into the Bolton team.

Speed, 38, who stepped down from his player-coach role last week, is also wanted by Stoke and Norwich.

No surprise really if that does happen.

As Sammy Lee has just left Bolton by mutual consent, I'd imagine that Speed will end up managing them instead of coming to us.

Can't see them going from one inexperienced manager to another to be honest.

i can, speed is somewhat of a cult hero over there so i agree with matt, he wont be coming now

I don't doubt he won't be coming, nor did I ever think he would, but can't see him being promoted to manager.

I can't see Bolton getting anyone big-name in, to be honest. Unless it's someone like Peter Reid, but he's not going to stop the rot.

i can see where your soming from, but Gartside needs to get some support again from the fans, and that could be just the tonic

do we really need any more strikers though?

No no no no, I ain't saying this.

Just saying if we were to sign him it would be a fantastic signing, but correct, we don't need him.

i agree would be a great signing. Just cant see that he would improve greatly on what we have, especially for the cost he would be
