SHEFFIELD UNITED SIGN GARY SPEED AS BRAMHALL LANE GAFFER
ABOVE: Sheffield United have made Gary Speed their new manager 17th August 2010 By Jeremy CrossYour Shout ( 0 )

GARY SPEED will be unveiled as the new Sheffield United manager today after agreeing a two-year deal at Bramall Lane.

The former Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Wales midfielder, 40, has agreed a deal to succeed sacked boss Kevin Blackwell.

Speed, who joined the Blades in a £250,000 move from Bolton in January 2008, sealed it after talks with chairman Kevin McCabe in Spain.

Speed jetted out to McCabe’s La Manga base yesterday to thrash out personal terms.

He has been working as the Blades’ first-team coach since being forced to quit playing because of a back injury last season.

And his appointment will be welcomed by players and supporters alike.

Blackwell paid the price for his side’s 3-0 home defeat by QPR at the weekend. Supporters were leaving before half-time after turning on the former Leeds and Luton manager, who will now hope to *secure £500,000 in compensation.

Speed, who keeps Blackwell’s assistant Sam Ellis as his No.2, had been linked with vacancies at Hull and Swansea earlier this summer.

His first game in charge will be a trip to promotion favourites Middlesbrough, where the Blades will be looking for their first win of the season.

Former United manager Neil Warnock has backed Speed’s appointment.

He said: “Gary is a good lad and will do a good job. I like him, he talks sense.”

But Warnock reckons his former club were wrong to sack Blackwell and he added: “I think Blacky has been unlucky.

“He has had decent money to spend there in the past, but situations change and recently he has had to look for Bosman frees and the like.”
