The Events team at the Lane have been putting together a list of 'Evenings....' pre-season

They'd issued a press release to the Star

'We've got Gareth Hale who's coming with Pace'

Of course you know what happens from there.

Ok fair enough.

Bale has a magnificent career for club and country though. One of best of his generation and scored one of the great European Cup final goals too.

It’s a shame for him that he’s been plagued with injuries or else he could’ve hit an even higher peak and enjoyed more longevity.

Too young to see him play but I don't particularly think it's likely players born in the era of rationing, having fewer global players in their way and none of the technology and insight we have now we're better than players today. Obviously there would be generational talents regardless of what era but competition is only increasing in a ever more global game so I dont think you can compare the two fairly. Rose tinted glasses make everyone better...

Be careful of recency bias as well…🤪

Been retired years.

Took the piss at Real Madrid.

Or Billy Meredith who played in the FL until he was nearly 50 and played for Wales when he was 46

If you’re looking purely at ability as a footballer, then technological and other advances will always make the more recent players better. If you invented a time machine, you’d probably discover that Connor Sammon was better than George Best, but you should only judge players by the era in which they played, and whether they were better than their contemporaries.
