Game off

Just one of those things , guess we've all woken up to find the heatings not working at some time, even on a well serviced system , its not different.

My central heating not working once when it's used daily for the majority of the year is not comparable to a modern-day undersoil heating system of a football pitch, which is expected to be used for a few hours prior to a handful of football games in a season, the funding of which is a drop in the ocean compared to that of player salaries.

Or systems break unexpectedly from time to time regardless of what pre-planning is in place. It’s not always due to incompetence but maybe that’s a bit too nuanced for some of the service continuity managers on here.

This post is far too sensible for this thread.

Don't you realise you should have sand in your vagina like most others on the thread?

You're a club plant. Or just a plant.

We're a recent premier league club without a game on because of a bit of frost. Someone's fucked up, stop making excuses up.
Pathetic, just resort to insults if someone has a different perspective. Is there anything you do like about SUFC? 🙂

Absolutely, its not emitter (pipe) failure in the most cases just circulation failure .
Undersoil invariably uses quite low temperature water in larger diameter pipework , basically meaning theres a lot of volume of water to shift around long loops of pipe , Remember its not heating just frost protection.

Its doubtful only one pump covers the entire system as it wouldn't make practical sense, a single pump failure covering part of the system or something as simple as a fuse or contact and nothings going to work on the affected section . Guess they found that when they got there this morning.

I guess the pic below might give people some idea of what's below the pitch.

Interesting to see an informed explanation.

It still seems odd/careless that United didn’t arrange for at least one of the ground staff team to monitor the situation overnight. Rather than them all just wake up and find that part of the system has failed with no time left to rectify the problem.

only one company to blame and thats sky if this was 3pm it would have kicked it was -6 at 5 am this morning people some people need to grow the fuck up and stop stamping their feet

So it's Sky's fault that our undersoil heating didn't work properly?

I really have heard it all now.

Only in that mechanical devices fail , sometimes without any warning. One moment its 100% the next its not . Sometimes you'll get a failure warning on a car or boiler , or it might make a funny noise etc , but sometimes they fail unpredictably without warning .
I cant imagine how many times engineers have heard the line " it was absolutely fine yesterday" .

Why is it that there hasn't been a Premier League game called off for a frozen pitch since, checks notes (AI), 2010, and we've had 3 Championship games called off today?

Out of curiosity what checks can be carried out on an undersoil heating system during periods of no frost to check the system is working as intended?

Aside from the conspiracy theories and "tinpot" accusations there is actually a very simple explanation, its just not as much fun .

Having spent most of my life in subsurface heating and cooling systems, these systems are made up of a series of loops of pipework .it absolutely not unusual for some loops covering one of the areas to fail , many who have UFH will have experienced this .

Simple mechanical failure in circulation , actuation or a simple air lock can cause this and it cant be anticipated, it just happens .

Mechanical devices fail , at the most inopportune times , and thats probably as simple as it is .

Its not quite as much fun as conspiracy or lack of funds or anything but its the most likely explanation.
Well, that won't help with the victim mentality, headloss & conspiracy theorists.

Great post

TBF the rage against the lack of a “monitoring system” is one of the greatest series of posts we’ve ever had on here. 😀

We set off at 8:30 am this morning from Kettering with my partner's two grandsons who were looking forward to their 1st trip to the Lane (eldest is 16 and an Oxford United fan). We arrived at 10:30 at which point the lad checked his phone & told us the game was off. I thought he was joking...

We just got home. That's a 180 mile return journey for nowt.

Thanks a bunch SUFC 😡

I want to know who transitioned this Service to live and where the associated risks are against the lack of HA and 24/7 alerting and monitoring implementation. More importantly who signed them off and is therefore accountable for this absolute disgrace.
It certainly wasn’t me, random fan from the Kop but I want to see the full RCA although bet the club don’t publish it in typical tin pot fashion.

Did you at least pick up a half and half scarf?

Diddums. At least you didn't see your team get battered.😄

On the 1st point , your right , its very rare which shows how reliable systems are, even ours untill today .

On the second point I'd imagine its checked by an engineer every 12 months before winter and fully commissioned ( flow rates and temperature checked etc ) not much more you can check if everything is working.

Problem being its probably the maintenance/ground person who fires it up when required who's probably not an engineer. They might well gave an operating manual but unlikely to check every single flow meter or gauge on the system or interpret an issue ( if there was one at start up) .

If thats the case they'll probably look at a bit of procedure to avoid in future .

Its possible everyone did everything correctly and it was a one off.

Like most home supporters I'm disappointed due to my own wasted journey but I'm sure many of us here realise it was worse for many away fans.

Biggest disappointment for me, not accounting for those who've had wasted journeys, is that we've not had a great opportunity to put ourselves in a very healthy position by the end of today.

All down to the coward of a referee, who deemed 2 areas unsafe and has hid behind the 'players safety' mantra
The fans should come first especially the Oxford supporters who should be allowed to through bricks at the twat as he scuttles off home fully paid
Hope his new year is fucking painful

The ref shouldn't have had a decision to make ,I'm afraid it's on the blades ground staff

It does sound then the wider pitch this season really is the issue if we got heater blowers in for the touch lines?

Fuck me I was only joking when I said it.

I suppose next summer we bring it back to its old pre Selles dimensions and next season it’s back to normal..

Just pray we have a mild rest of this winter.

If Abdullah was still owner we could have a load of a jokes about him not paying the bill again. Opportunity missed.

It is, but as with most mechanical systems that require human intervention, the human part fucked up somehow.

Nope, apparently it was turned on according to United. Therefore it's not fit for purpose.

It's absolutely amateurish as Deadbat has said above.

I honestly think trying to defend the club in this is really silly. Just admit it's shit.
And also any 'appology from teh club or is that beneath them
From SUFC's social media:

Today's Sky Bet Championship fixture against Oxford United has been postponed.

The referee was called to Bramall Lane this morning with parts of the playing surface frozen and following an inspection he has taken the decision to call off the fixture due to concerns over player safety.

An announcement regarding a rearranged date will be confirmed in due course.

Officials at Sheffield United are extremely disappointed the fixture could not go ahead.

In the build up to the game, our pre-match procedures for forecasted low temperatures were followed, which included the use of our undersoil heating system.

This morning a small section of the playing surface was raised as a cause for concern. With this area still part frozen, all attempts were made to address this section of the pitch for it to meet the standard required for the match to go ahead.

The referee was then called in at the earliest possible opportunity to assess the playing surface. After he arranged an inspection, he deemed there to be a player safety concern, and opted to call off the fixture at 10am.
But as usual, no apology from the club to the fans of both teams particularly Oxford fans who has already travelled. Classless United, completely classless!
