If someone came up with enough money McCabe would have no problem loosening the rein and making us financially attractive. There's been plenty of opportunity over the past 20 years under McCabe's tenure and serious interest has added up to a big fat zero. He's also gone on record as saying he will only sell to someone who has the club's long term interest at heart and that money will not be the overriding factor. You don't have to look too far to see the prime example of this, first with the Azerbaijani's and secondly with the tuna lord. I confidently expect the big implosion to start there in about 12 months time (along with a few of the other clubs you allude to).

Careful what you wish for.

If we don't have a pot to piss in then the only thing that will keep us up will be Chris and his marvellous management skills, however he will need money or expect him to be off to pastures new in a couple of years.

It's wages not transfer fees that need funding.

If you think the four signings we have made so far will cost us less than £500k then you're deluded.

Big transfer fees and good players are not inextricably linked.

Completely agree as long as the manager has the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff.

There's plenty of overpaid, ineffective, prima donnas stealing their living out there.

Wilder's done a pretty good job at that so far.
 
Doesn't anyone think it would be a good idea to consolidate our position in this league before we start complaining about not buying the players for the one above. ? :rolleyes:

Whatever methods the giants of the game Watford, Palace, Bournemouth etc have employed to get to the top, they didn't do it by arguing the toss with clubs in a League below them over a pathetic amount of additional money for their players

how much is this pathetic amount of money btw?

I can't recall having seen any reliable figures published anywhere.

We've tried several times to gain promotion by chucking money at it and look where that's got us.

Not really.

If I had my way I'd invite all those fans who think we should "consolidate" next season to an open day and offer to take their season tickets and membership cards back and give them a refund. I'd explain to them that you never achieve anything if you just set out to "consolidate", not in football and not in life. I'd explain to them that the players and management team are not even remotely thinking of consolidation and neither should they be. It's important that all fans have the same "winning" mentality from the start of the season. You start to think about "consolidation' only when you are in a crisis, not when you are in the crest of a wave.

Agreed ...... "spunking" staggering amounts of money doesn't guarantee success ( the arrogant scum are a perfect example).

However, if we are to "push on" and consolidate in the Championship we will need to bring in a few "Championship quality" players and they will not be available for £250K. The Board must realise this and make resources available to Tufty accordingly or we will get nowhere fast !!

No I know what you mean, step by step approach to recruitment, and I don't disagree with that. I just hate the phrase "consolidation". I think we've recruited well so far. I really wouldn't want to see us blow big money on players like another Sheffield team have done. When our low budget, non-famous, players set about them at Hillsborough in September they'll realise that they've wasted a lot of money.

I'd also like to add that by adding two or three players we would then be in a position to "consolidate"

Then we can add two or three more next year to improve

Then two or three the year after to push for a play off place

Not that the dopey fans of this club will think that way

Maybe the dopey fans can see we've already added 4 players with 3/4 to come.
 
I don't think it's advisable or wise to go up and suddenly spunk £5-10 million on players.

Firstly, we obviously don't have the money.
Secondly, we have a very good team spirit. That kind of investment and wage levels would likely erode or destroy that
Thirdly, the sensible plan is to consolidate and build.

Teams like Huddersfield, Burnley, Leicester and Barnsley have demonstrated what can be achieve.

For me, we need to invest say £2.5 million in fees/wages. This includes wage rises for current players.

The vital investment is needed off the field. Our scouting network needs to be on a par with the best in the division. You don't need to spend huge money (like Villa) to get success. You do need to invest in scouting, coaches and youth. Snapping up players from across Europe and training our own.

We've finally got a good chief scout in place. We need to help him by expanding our scouting networks further afield.
 
So where is all this game changing investment, is it stuck in the post or something as per previous eras. There was I thinking we were holding back a couple of decent signings waiting for their previous contracts to expire on 30th June and we'd announce their signings the next day then nowt, just continued rumours of interest in several but only prepared to spend pennies or our valuation and not a penny more. We need to do enough to survive next season and act more like a business than a charity shop. Cue pinchy rubbish.
