Their start - an away draw at Lillestrøm (Jan Åge Fjørtoft's former club), a home victory vs Viking (Roger Nilsen's old club) and an away draw at Strømsgodset (Jostein Flo is Director of Football) - has been impressive.

If we found ourselves in the Premiership and started with away draws at Liverpool and Tottenham while beating Arsenal at home, it would be similarly surprising.

Sarpsborg is a very small club in Norway though, Deano should get a lot of credit if he can keep them up.

I think Deane will be a good manager, he seems to have his head screwed on and knows how to play the game.

I do disagree with this whole 'black manager' issue which is cropping up at the moment though. Whats the ratio of black to white players in the english league? and what's the ratio of black to white managers in the english league? Bet it's very similar, especially when you only considered english players/managers.

It's just a coincidence that most black managers who have had their break have been shite, but still doesn't mean when a good black manager comes along they will be discriminated against. Are there actually any black british former players that have expressed an interest in getting into management? I'd have thought that would be well documented.

The ratio is 25% of player are non white therefore out of 92 clubs if racism wasn't a factor I would expect more than 1 or 2 non white managers.

Quite a few i think.

Paul Davis of Arsenal is one that has been quite vocal on the subject. He could be just shit at his job though.

We've been here before. If you look at the number of black players who are doing coaching badges, then I think they are over represented in terms of percentages.

I'm afraid this is a good example of the race card being used.

Well if they're over represented in terms of doing coaching badges, then sure there would be far more black managers would there not?

Sorry, should have been clearer. The number of players doing coaching badges is so few that it suggests they are over represented in terms of those breaking into management. I think Dazzler or Walthy did the honours re the stats about year ago. Either way, there's a thread somewhere about it.

If your good enough then you will get the breaks. Coulour of skin doesnt come into it.

The truth is most ex black players prefer to become pundits than Managers or coaches.

Hang on, doesn't that meat hat white players are underrepresented in the playing staff of the 92 clubs?

Or is it only a problem if its the blacks who are underrepresented??

In all seriousness, there is clearly something that means that blacks are, proportionally speaking, over represented in the playing staff of the 92. Maybe the thing that makes them good players is the same thing that makes them unwilling/unable to become managers?

They're never "ex black", apart from Michael Jackson. ;)

And who has asked these chaps to find out what they'd prefer? There may not be many black managers but there aren't that many black ex-players doing punditry either. Jason Roberts seems to be slowly making the transition to punditry and he's pretty good too, but I can't think of too many who are regular pundits for either the Beeb or ITV.

Leroy Rosenior, Garth Crooks, Mark Bright, Kamara

And then you have other players involved in the media. (such as reporting live at matches on Soccer Saturday for Sky Sports. Stan Collymore on the radio for example.

I dont think its to do with Racism why they arnt making the transition.

Maybe its simply because they dont want to become coaches, or managers etc.

Did you know that Lester Piggott was partially deaf and had a speech impediment? What next do you suggest Stevie Wonder becomes Director of Specsavers?
