Five years ago I saw us lose 4-0 at Stevenage Borough. It was an awful, embarrassing performance. There was no excuse for being outclassed by a side who were near the bottom of League One. Our players were, or should have been, better than their players.
Yesterday we were outclassed by possibly the best team I have seen in the second tier, who have players who, ultimately, are better players than ours. There is no disgrace in that. Yes, there are questions to be asked, about the quality of the centres and our tendency to overplay it at times. But this really isn't a crisis. We move on.

That was near the end of Bryan Robson's time of manager wasn't it. Having come down from the Premier League we were shocked that we couldn't beat Colchester United!

The ''Robson Tenth Anniversary Shoes Off Sacking Plate'' is being made as we speak at Denby Pottery.
I'm going for the Decanter... well, it is cheaper.

No no no, that never happened, top of the Championship is our minimum entitlement.

Thank goodness as the dust settles on a disappointing performance we are getting (a majority of?) sensible posts recognising that the end of the world is not nigh. I would like to indulge in the illogical action of having a rant about people who have rants. TV, radio phone-ins, and forums thrive on drama (total failure v total success), and this has led to grotesque over-reactions and sense of entitlement. In the last few weeks, just in catching occasional few minutes of the Radio5 phone-in, of the top 6 in the Premier League, I have heard calls for the dismissal of Klopp, Wenger, Conte and Mourinho. When being in the top 6 of the top league is considered failure, no wonder such attitudes are filtering down the football pyramid. Yesterday was 1 of 4 or 5 poor performances this season, but take any point in the last 7 years and compare it with where we are now, and the progress is plain to see. The squad, the manager, the fan-base, the league position... All vastly improved, and we want that to continue, but the sense of despair and outrage amongst a vocal minority, as with other clubs, is frankly laughable. One detail: on Tuesday, we were the better team (just) against Villa, and lost in the last minute to a piece of brilliance; after 5 minutes of being competitive yesterday, we went behind to an even greater piece of individual brilliance. Within 6 or 7 minutes of game time, a team learning to adapt to a higher level of football were undone twice by sheer class, and no wonder their confidence went, and mistakes crept in. On the record of the last 18 months, we will learn, hopefully by next Saturday. And don't forget, it is a long time since we were even number 1 in South Yorkshire.
